Once again, digging up an old thread, but I think this is worth it, regarding the 6 second garage break-in video posted. In case you missed it, the link is here:

I'm in the process of re-doing my garage, and the first part was tinting the windows on the garage door and side door to the garage. I did this so people can't look in the windows and tell if I'm home (based on if my cars are there), but it has an added benefit of making the garage door release trick more difficult, though not impossible.
I was perusing the Garage Journal forum (
The Garage Journal Board - Powered by vBulletin, yeah who knew there are garage forums) looking for tips on doing an epoxy floor, when I stumbled upon this simple "zip tie" fix to the garage break-in issue. I implemented it myself today, with just a small modification.
This is a shot of the manual door release catch for my garage door:
Step 1: Drill a hole just above the lever
Step 2: Insert a zip tie in the hole. In my case, I must have drilled the hole a fraction of an inch off because with a zip tie I could still (just barely) engage the release. I replaced the zip tie with a small bolt, and problem solved.
Hope this is helpful.
