It all depends... and what you are comparing it to.. Most 4runner owners do not really off-road their truck on anything more than a awd subaru could handle.
A stock 4wheel drive 4runner can do a lot of stuff, but a lifted one can do quite a bit more (again nothing too extreme).
My truck can walk up some pretty technical stuff (it is more than just lifted...). There would be simply no way, even stacking rocks to .... to get a stock truck up the same stuff.. even winching... you can't really winch when there is no chance of clearance.
Now, is the stuff I'm talking about anything you would encounter on an avg trail or overland trip. Absolutely not.. I go looking for tough trails and I'm mostly just screwing around with it for the hell of it and being over prepared for over landing adventures. I call it practice...
Bottom line. don't lift it unless you need to. You will know pretty quickly.
I saw the article about a stock 4runner on the rubicon (that keeps getting posted on threads like this). That is extremely misleading. I won't even take my runner on the Rubicon as it sits. It's probably technically possible for a stock truck with an expert guide taking the easiest possible lines... but try following a group of jeeps on the rubicon and see how far your stock 4runner goes. It would be ugly and embarrassing.
