How capable is a non-lifted T4R?

It all depends... and what you are comparing it to.. Most 4runner owners do not really off-road their truck on anything more than a awd subaru could handle.

A stock 4wheel drive 4runner can do a lot of stuff, but a lifted one can do quite a bit more (again nothing too extreme).

My truck can walk up some pretty technical stuff (it is more than just lifted...). There would be simply no way, even stacking rocks to .... to get a stock truck up the same stuff.. even winching... you can't really winch when there is no chance of clearance.

Now, is the stuff I'm talking about anything you would encounter on an avg trail or overland trip. Absolutely not.. I go looking for tough trails and I'm mostly just screwing around with it for the hell of it and being over prepared for over landing adventures. I call it practice...

Bottom line. don't lift it unless you need to. You will know pretty quickly.

I saw the article about a stock 4runner on the rubicon (that keeps getting posted on threads like this). That is extremely misleading. I won't even take my runner on the Rubicon as it sits. It's probably technically possible for a stock truck with an expert guide taking the easiest possible lines... but try following a group of jeeps on the rubicon and see how far your stock 4runner goes. It would be ugly and embarrassing.

I'm definitely more of an Overland/Trail kinda guy as that's the most practical form of 4WD I'm likely to face.

For rock climbing and technical trails that are more for fun than practical, a lift would definitely be in order.

I guess one of the exceptions could be some of the stuff Ronny Dahl does. I'm a big fan of his videos as he uses his LC79 to get to some hard to reach places just due to the nature of it being Australia. His lifted rig has really come into good use out there.

Totally agree. You can get anyone almost anywhere with enough stacking of rocks (been there done that) but it's definitely more convenient to not be that burden and just lift your shit. Lol

Please UNSTACK the obstacle when you are done.....otherwise, you're ruining the challenge for everyone else.

Thanks for the advise? Obviously if someone stacks then we unstack immediately. Not everyone in the group wants a bridge. We put the most capable rigs in front and rear..

Don't get your nose out of joint....I was just making the comment so those newer to wheeling (and it seems from the comment in this thread that there are a good many of them here) know proper trail etiquette.

I wasn't trying to come off with any haste or attitude. You just quoted me specifically and I know proper trail etiquette. Not that you are aware of my specific knowledge but we're good. People like to go out and experience a challenge :)

We're good. I wasn't intending to single you out specifically....yours was *I thought* the second comment I read about "if one can't make it, just stack some rocks"....and I thought it a good idea to clarify on standard rules of the trail. We've had some great trails here closed b/c of people rock stacking and making illegal trail braids and 'go-arounds' b/c they were in over their heads. Just trying to keep the obstacles challenging and public trails open.

Boy am I glad we hugged that out

We have really raised a society of overly sensitive douches. Come here big boy I'll give you a hug; and buy you a beer. Just don't shed a tear on the trails. Ugh.... read the footer.
