How close is the A340F to the AW4 in Cherokee? The rebuild Kit is for both.

The reason I ask this is for the AW4 the spec fluid changed to Chrysler’s ATF4 around 2007 instead of DEX3.

Different bell housings and 4wd output flanges, different gear ratios, different amount of friction materials/steels depending on A340F application, and I believe it has a different valve body. Same manufacturer though.

I’m really wondering about using ATF4 or pennzoil multi vehicle synthetic instead of DEX 3. The friction material is the same. The throttle valve controls line pressure so on both the Toyota and the Jeep they’re just energizing a solenoid to shift gears.

What transmission fluid are you currently using. I'm using Dexron VI because it's available at work (pronounced free) and it's backwards compatible to Dexron III. I flushed all the old trans fluid out when I changed transmission fluids after changing the transmission filter and haven't had any issues after about 5k miles and 7 months.

I’m running regular Dex 3 supertech and do a drain and fill once a year. However, I have 20qts of ATF4 at the house sitting on a shelf.

Are we certain the transmissions do not use different friction materials? As an example Monteros use the same trans but they are known to dislike anything except Mitsubishi Diamond fluid. My guess is different friction materials in them. Maybe I'm wrong but fluid is cheap and not worth risking a healthy transmission just to use some sitting fluid.

I agree about the fluid.......unless there are different friction plates in the master kit for the A340 and the AW4 then the frictions are identical.

I only put around 6,000 miles a year on the Toy so changing out a gallon once a year with supertech is defiantly keeping me ahead of the game fluid wise.

Who makes this master kit? OEM? Aisin? If aftermarket I could see a risk that they use the same friction plates for all makes. Might work just as well but definitely not a good guide to follow for what is currently in your transmission.

It was aftermarket.

Aisin does not make a rebuild kit for the trans.

OEM wise I guess buying bands and friction and steels from Toyota and figuring out if it’s worth piecing all the seals from Toyota or buying a aftermarket kit with all the seals and bushings. You’re not going to find a complete kit from Aisin or Toyota.

My trans has 270,000 miles on it. I have a spare with 240,000 I plan on rebuilding. For the AW4 using ATF4 Mother Mopar recommends breaking in the fresh trans with Dex3 and at the first servicing after the rebuild to use the ATF4.
