A lot of the android tabs have GPS. I have the Asus TF300 and the GPS works well, you can also download maps straight from Google maps. I'm thinking about getting a 7in tab and mounting it straight in the dash.

I don't have a picture in the 2002 but here it is in the 98. I made tabs to line up the mounting holes in the radio with the holes in the factory radio bracket. It's not quite as wide as the DIN radio but it's not bad. It needs an external speaker since the sound is muffled (the speaker is up against the AM/
FM radio).

I thought it did, I looked at the Nexus 7 but I went with the Galaxy Tab 2 because it has a Micro SD card slot for additional memory. The Backcountry Navigator maps take a ton of memory; for Colorado I downloaded a map of (North to South) Steamboat to Canon City, and (East to West) the edge of Denver to just past Glenwood Springs, and it took an entire 32GB Micro SD card. It also took 36 hours to download! That is my core wheeling area, and I have another card that i will use to download smaller maps when I'm in Moab, expedition style trips, etc.





It's just a different upgraded topo map layout, I like it a lot better than the recommended default map it comes with. It's a lot easier to read and seems to be more detailed. I figured for the price of the BCN app, I could justify upgrading to the AccuTerra map set. I can post a picture of the map if you guys want, just let me know.

Dang thats an awesome map.. so tempting.

My tablet was worth every penny for me at least. It was $200 for the 32gb version (prettymuch new off craigslist) and it holds all my textbooks, works great for netflix, awesome for timewasting games, and the screen is the perfect size for this new backcountry GPS venture. Plus since my phone and tablet are both android, I was able to get the backcountry app on both devices with only paying for it once.

Rickashay- is that the flexible ram mount? if so, how does it hold up to offroading? I have shied away from it because it seems like it would move around as you go over bumps.


ATCyotadude- check out Overland Navigator. I have it on an old toughbook, but recently he has been working on an IPad app.

You have to be very selective about what iPad model you buy. The regular iPads do not have a GPS chip, only the high-end WiFi + Cellular models. Then there's the fact that Apple refuses to use expandable memory, so your $20 32GB SD card option is out and you need to buy the most expensive WiFi + Cellular model just to have enough storage space for maps. A $179 Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" model has everything you need for one-third the price.

Here's my Galaxy Tab with Proclip mounting.

I see 98OzarksRunner has the Yaesu FT2800 ham radio--I have the newer model called the 1900R and it's even smaller yet. I chose to trim it out with perforated steel so I could still hear the speaker and allow for ventilation. I also gives an industrial look if you like that sort of thing.

Google Maps is a blessing on road trips, and any GPS capable device on Android will navigate without data. If anyone here knows what rooting their phone is, do it then you can tether wifi without paying for it which is pretty cool. Way off topic but here's what I use.

Yeah it can hold a GN 2 sideways. China brand I bought off Amazon for $25.

have you come up with a charging solution for the transformer when your on the road? needs a 15v transformer?

I have not, I don't use it in my truck ll that much. If I needed to I have a big power converter under the driver seat.

I realize its not a tablet, but I have the RAM mount X-Grip with suction cup for holding my Iphone. I'm beyond impressed how solid the thing is. I would imagine any of the RAM products would be a great option for tablets FWIW

i figured i would share this here, as im sure they arent on the forums but i thought this was fuggin sick, its a soundman car audio ipad mini float mount kit and a sony head unit. Ive been do some research about a mod like this myself but im gonna use a nexus tablet. but heres some pictures the ipad is held in with magnets. and uses a sony app to control the headunit.

There is an n7 install thread on xda or rootzwiki....I think. Anyway the n7 has usb otg (on the go) cable support which allows it to mount external HDD's, SSD's, usb sticks, ext wifi dongle etc. It cost $2 online but for $5 you get a 3 ended cable with male usb micro, female usb micro, and female usb standard so you can hook up ext. HDD and power supply. Also if you have a rooted and unlocked n7 then you can install a custom kernel that is optimized for permanent vehicle installation. I believe it gives better options for charging and powering an 300+gb hdd(?) but not sure. Anyway just google '(youre tablet)'+ 'otg support' to find out and also 'timurs kernel' if you have n7.
