How do these websites actually work?

Hi All,
On many of the recent posts about buying new 2010's I have noticed people mentioning websites like cars.overstock.com and carsdirect.com. I have never used one of these websites before and wanted to know how going through these websites actually works?
Anything in particular that I need to look out for when going through these dealerships and approaching a dealer?
Any information would be hugely educational.

I used carsdirect.com a long time ago for my 1998 Tacoma and 2000 Audi. I think it was called something else back then, but it's the same site. Pretty good luck with it.

Only one issue: When I got to the Audi dealer to pick up my car, there was one option that I had chosen on the site but wasn't actually on the car. Had to point that out to the dealer and get that part of the price taken off. (It was HID headlights.) Other than that it worked out fine.
