How many CVs have you broken?

I'm another manual still wheeling the stock axles (re-booted once at 205k). And yes I wheel as hard as snowrunner and glenyoshidia and are doing the same lines that they break on.

The differences between my rig and theirs are...
I'm a manual, they are autos
I'm running 265/75-16, snowrunner 285/75-16 and glenyoshidia 305/70-16
I'm sitting at ~3.5" in front, they are ~4" in front
all there N/A engines
All are about the same weight
Mine is green, theirs are silver

I can believe that jeep rolled in hells gate. i just ran that while i was out there, by myself. Its not that bad.

I agree it does take quite a bit to break one. It almost always will happen in a fully cranked turn.

This is the prototype axle with the stronger cage and new race. The inner tripod joint and the mid shaft are still the same as from Toyota, it's the outer joint that has the stronger cage and race. The blue inner silicone CV boot is for those high CV angles. There may be new outer boots soon as well. These boots are blue for this prototype but they may change color.

I just put a set in my rig and I'm having a set being built up for Sn0wrunner so we can both test them. They are essentially available now but I would wait until winter for thorough testing to be done. We should have ample opportunity to break these by then. We have a bunch of fun (hard) wheeling planned this summer and then another Moab trip in the fall. I'll let you know if I think they are worth the extra cost by then. My best guess is that they will be $450/each when all is said and done.

I'm saying it now, these are NOT supposed to be unbreakable. They can still break! The engineering goal is for a balance of greater strength in the outer joint and planned weak link. I'd much rather replace a CV in 30 mins then have to find a way to replace a front differential on the trail.

Here's the prototype CV with the new components in the outer joint. Pretty boring looking right lol?

Check out convolutions on the inner boot. The silicone has a thicker wall than the previous redish ones. My wheels are straight forward in the photo with a 4" lift. No touching :)

Here's the outer. I'm pretty sure we will be making new outer CV boots too.

Nice Glen! I will probably be ordering some from you if thinks go well for your summer wheeling plans. I have tore both in CV boots and went with the Slee Offroad boots. I should be fully armored for the most part by this weekend. Now if winches and bumpers werent so much!

Any plans to sell just that cage? Ive got plenty of axles. I just need the cage if its worth while
If I'm understanding you correctly I wish it were an easy swap. I would have been happy to offer that as an option. A stronger cage means a new race to go along with it. If you have the tools to pull apart a CV from the midshaft and then put it all back together let me know. I'd be happy to sell you the parts if you want to do the work. Toyota didn't make the CVs to be part serviceable so I don't think the average person would have the press/tools needed to do the work.

I haven't tried either. I thought that there wasn't an easy way to get to the C Clip. Give it a shot if you have some free time. It could be a good way to save some $$. Let me know what you find.

Glen- nice to see you post once in a while. I am still going to have to save my pennies and come wheel with some of you CO guys. Maybe we can get a So Cal, CO trip planned. The axles look great keep us informed on how they hold up.

if they end up being good ill try this out
Birfield rebuild

Great find! Next time someone local breaks a CV I'll check it out too. Doesn't look bad if it's similar to that Suzuki write up. It would be great to able to just rebuild them ourselves. I think it would be cool to do plus a great way to save some money.

Kind of bummer timing. I just had 4 more OE axles made up with the stronger outer cage and race. That pretty much tapped me out of cash. We're in wheeling season though. It's just a matter of time before someone else pops a stock CV and that'll be a good excuse to try the disassembly

Let us know if you are able to get the C-Clip without a press. I'll do the same :)

Thanks for sharing that find!

Any suggestion on quaility boots?

Does anybody know what this is? Just seemed to fall out.
Chock me up for my first.... yeah, I thought I was gonna be 'that' 40 yr old virgin...phew.

What sucks is that I had just replaced my inner boots the week before with Slee Offroad inner boots that are techcnicly made for tacomas, not 4runners... but they will sell them to you without a disclaimer of this, plus no instructions included. Not that you really need them, but it would have been nice to know that I had to use part of my old stock inner boot.

Any body have suggesting for what the best boots are to use?

Taco and 4runner cv's are the same. It looks like you broke a cv, I don't understand what you are really asking. Maybe someone else does.

The CVs may be the same but the housing is different between the two.
Here is a crummy drawing show a cross-section of the difference between the two.
I also provided a pic that show the rubber 'flanges' on the inner CV boot of a 4runner that prevents 'CV juice' leakage, the inner boot that Slee offroad sells doesnt have these 'flanges', it is just a complete circle.
I called Slee and was rather upset about this fact, and they are not providing this info to the consumer. The guy I talked with really didnt seem to care about my frustrations... he said they cut out the top rubber part of the stock boot(as pictured below) when they install in their shop, and just carry their $50$ boot over it and then clamp.
This didnt make any sense to me since it would make the assembly, metal(CV housing) on old used rubber(image posted), on rubber($50$ Slee boot), then tied off with clamp ring.
Rubber on rubber just doesnt seem right, and trying to keep the Slee boot from wanting to slide off the old cut out is damn near impossible!

I have seen both, and have used both in my 4runner. Actually i have one of each style installed right now. when you get replacements sometimes you get one with the curvy inner and sometimes you get the round inner. Plus that rubber does hold it on there while out of the truck, but you should not be able to slide it apart while in the truck. Its kind of like the slip yolk on a driveshaft. you can pull it apart while its off the truck, but shouldnt come apart while on it. See this mi my issue with re-booting cv joints. You could have got a remanufactured cv joint for the cost of those boots

That rubber boot is nothing more than a dust/water cover IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HOLD IT TOGETHER. if you broke an outer you can sometimes have the shaft slip out of the inner.

Yeah, I just picked up an OEM one from my secret yard. $50. Only thing is, is that the inner boot on this one is gonna tear in the same place my old OEM boot did from its age... but I have some ideas!!! (wink, wink).
I am just butt hurt that I just bought a $50 boot only to have it eaten a week later.:repuke:

This replacement axle was from a 96' runner.
I was just wondering if anybody has ever added KY gel to the inner boots on these older axles?
I didnt have any KY around so I used some A&D ointment and buttered the inner boot hoping to give the deteriorated and aged boot more life... anybody think it might help? It helps with diaper rashes and healing a fresh tattoo, why not a 1996 CV boot!:girl::banana::girl::banana::girl::banana::wow::wow::wow::wow:
