Ok Conner I don't know who your mechanic is but at that price you should go talk to the Truck Shop. Convince your Dad
At least then you will get a Toyota specialist shop doing the work & brand new aftermarket JE heads.:yo:
The situation sucks. Also you should be cautious about any heads from a wreck yard. Perhaps there is something I dont know but why would any wreck yard have perfectly good used heads not attached to an engine? That doesn't make any sense. If the engine they were originally attached to ran fine then they would still be attached; right?

He said it was a rebuilt head if I remember correctly. In that case it is less of a question why it is off the engine. Somebody could have taken the other one and an engine with one head is worth about as much as one with no heads. Might as well rebuild the other one to have on hand and (possibly) save on rebuild cost.
Its a practice I've seen with bigger motors like the LS, LT, 5.0s, etc. Some salvage places back home will take the heads off wrecked cars with those motors and rebuild them so they have them on the shelf for when teenagers who "build" their motors to run nitrous decide not having coolant will shave time off their ET.
EDIT: by no way is this saying dont be cautious when getting a head or anything else from a yard

If the head that failed was removed from the engine, leaving a single head and an engine block then that isn't a really good situation either.
For one thing the remaining head, even if it isn't cracked or warped is probably used, seriously 150k+ miles used. It is probably on the upper end of its lifespan. What I think would happen is whenever an engine fails for any reason, wreck yards might take the head off and examine it. Hey that one doesn't look that bad, lets resurface it and sell it.
Despite my caution, the head might be perfectly good for another 50k+ miles ... I just wanted to bring this up is all.
Rebuilt heads from cylinder heads International $350 to my door. The rebuild shop was going to charge me like $350+ each and not adjust the valves. My heads were both cracked multiple places +160 in head gaskets, +90 in head bolts.
I think it tool me 20 some hours to do mine but I put some of it together wrong and had to back track. 20hour x$100/hr, I'd do one for someone also at that rate. I don't know how fast you could do one of you were good at it, maybe a little more than a 8 hour day?
I do bid jobs sometimes for work. It isn't car stuff but sometimes there is some cushion in there for things they aren't comfortable fixing. Plus the first one failed. People mention getting used motor swaps for less $.

Crossing my fingers for ya Connor. A good time as any to make sure all timing components and gaskets are up to snuff.
It seems like all HG failures, for those vehicles that have been kept in good shape, seemed to be reserved for the 96-97 year engines.

My old heads looked like total crap when they were pulled. Those have clearly been resurfaced at the least.

Ya the passenger head looked REALLY good because it had just been rebuilt.
I'm hopefully getting a call tomorrow with a time if completion.

I ended up buying that passenger head for $300 from George! I haven't seen the driver's head yet because it's the original one and currently being resurfaced!

I thought that was a very fair price considering the work is already done and all you have to do pretty much is bolt it on with a gasket.If you searched high and low you might be able to find one about 20-40 cheaper maybe, but it was ready to go now. They are cool dudes at that yard and fair. They were both Marines and now run that truck yard and play with cool stuff all day.
