How to deal with high Gas prices?

You know gas prices would drop if we all drove like "grandma". I'll go into cruise-control at 65 mph (highway speed limit) and see tons of cars passing me.

If I'm not mistaken, going at 70 mph reduces efficiency by 15%. Therefore, thats why highways were at 55 mph for so long. We drive gingerly in our vehicles all we want but its the others on the road who are making prices sky-high.

We think in America we have to go faster or getting there faster actually saves gas when that's not true. If everyone drove at more reasonable speeds and didn't think it was Nascar out there then we'd have less of a demand for gasoline consumption.

Nothing beats simple math either:
70 mph = 70 miles traveled in an hour
60 mph = 60 miles traveled in an hour
Time to travel 70 miles @ 60 mph: 1 hour, 10 minutes (1 mile per minute)
Do people really need to get to their destination 10 minutes faster? Does it make that much of a difference?

Ok, that's pretty philosophical to ask. But within reason, no. Most people are not in a life or death situation traveling Saturday morning wherever their going.

In any event, we're just too lazy to leave 10 minutes or 15 minutes earlier. No wonder Exxon has profits of over $7.5 billion dollars!?!?

You just got the exact point. It's easy for me to get up 15 min earlier and drive normal then be late and drive like today is my last day of driving....
But for some point I want to save on my gas a little bit more. Yesterday gas prices on gas stations gone over a dollar ($1.02-$1.05Cdn per liter) which is more then $3.80US per gallon. And this is just regular. Its ridicules, where are we going, to match European gas prices (1.5-1.8Euro per liter)?

does anyone know how feasible it would be or possible at that to make the 4runner's run off E85?!? would it be just changing some rubber or what? a gallon of E85 is going for about $1.60 right now and it is 105 octane. you can check more about it, at least about the fuel at:

anyways, that would be nice rather than paying the nearing $3.00 a gallon.

Yes, at an exchange rate of 1.19 it becomes that 1Cdn/liter = 3.18Us/gal. But prices are not the same all around the country. I've seen 1.16Cdn in Vancouver which is 3.69US/gal. How do you like it?...?

Now that I'm out of school, I just don't drive as much. I haven't gotten gas in 3 weeks.

When I was driving 100 miles a day back and forth to school, I used to baby it and would get great (for an SUV) gas mileage. But I'd still have to fill up once every 3-4 days.

sorry if this thread is old but i have to agree... get a bike!

i save 35 bucks a week in filling up..and shaved off an 1.75 hrs from my 3 hr round trip to work... i just drive the 4runner in the weekends now..

I have a Miata (yea its a go-cart but fun as hell to take the turns in) that I cruise back and forth to work 3/4 times a week to cut down on the gas costs.

It is weird going back the 4Runner but my wallet is happy...

I just moved out to IL from NJ a month ago..... My insurance for a year is still less then half of what I paid in NJ... I love it.

Not trying to rub it in. For a while I had my cars registered at my mothers address in VA because it was much cheaper.

Before I left I got a quote from NJ Cure and they were cheap.... I had cheap insurance from Allstate till I got a ticket.... Oh well.

Another thing I heard that seems to be true is Gieco and Allstate are in a competition. I called Allstate out here before I moved here and their quote was pretty high... I called around and almost went with Gieco.... My gf then told me about this competition and I called a different broker out here and started my sentence with something about Gieco's low rate.... Somehow they beat the price (which I never mentioned) by A LOT...

PS. How is NJ.. I grew up in North Brunswick and was living down in Ewing/Pennington just before I left.

Being an ole guy, I remember the "gas shortage" of 1976, gas lines into the streets, able to buy gas only on even or odd days, outrageous prices, etc. what a hassle! Like I say, at least today it's available, and you have the choice or whether to get out and enjoy life, and race that 4R through the desert, or sit home and watch the geeks on TV tell you how bad times are! Life is short: enjoy it!!

Ditto for me! I've been around the block a few times too, and can remember the gas lines of 1973 and 1979. Those were the "odd" and "even" days, and the days when you kept around 5 gal gas cans (several) in your garage. I guess it's all relative and what perspective you're coming from.

A funny thing I noticed is that when one gas station is selling gas at perhaps 3-5 cents/gallon less than the competition there is a line of cars at that station, while down the road you can pull right in and fill up with no wait at an extra cost of maybe 60 cents-$1.00/tank and saving 15 minutes or more. That is a bargain to me.

My bike has saved me a ton of money in gas. Even when you're hard on the throttle the gas mileage is WAAAY better than any SUV and most cars.

edit: Although I guess my gas savings are taken back by the Porsche. Oh well, both are fun!

Maybe with the latest oil price increase, Toyota might consider offering TurboDiesel engines in the U.S.A.

And the U.S. Government should reduce taxes on Diesel fuel, being it a Gasoline byproduct, and cheaper in every other country on the planet.

Diesel is cheaper to produce, gives more miles per gallon, and modern Diesel engines pollute less.

Toyota should follow the smart examples from Jeep and Volkswagen.
