How-To-Guide (TRD CAI) Installation

Need help I'm missing the intake box rubber plug. I have contacted camelback and they don't know what I'm talking about. At the moment I have electrical tape over the hole and that just does not sit well with me. Can anyone help me locate the part or another fix?

Are you taking about on the bottom or side of the box?

The hole on the side needs to be filled with a plug supplied by another source, I got mine at lowes in the hdw dept. add some silcone and call it done.

The holes on the bottom should all be filled by the hdw crossed over from the old box.

Are you referencing the hole in the side of the intake box.
No plug is included for that hole, that's why they didn't know what you were talking about.
I went to the local parts store and sourced a plug that would fit/cover the hole and silicone it in place.... easy peezy! :juggle:

The hole on the front. What did you get from home depot rubber plug?

Just to clarify what we are talking about with pictures...

Just wanted to thank the forum for spending my money and helping me get this installed.
Got it up and running on my 2016 thanks to you guys.

:tea:

For those who have installed the CAI, how crucial is silicon spray? Can a little elbow grease omit the need for spray?

Just raid the night stand.....:rapture:

Life is to short to omit lube , work smarter not harder

Ha! When I was typing that post I originally typed lubricant and edited it to "spray" due to it just sounding ridiculous.

Other than KY, any recommendations on O2 sensor safe lube?

I would say it could be done without silicone spray, but the time it takes to acquire some will be more peaceful than the time trying to do it without. Also you will need to re-adjust the fittings to get everything in place. I would say get the silicone and everything will be easier.

Ended up going with liquid wrench dry spray lube. Install took about an hour. Only issue is extra parts. I knew about the extra air box clips, but what the crap is this plate for?

Sadly I am not near me 4Runner to check but I believe it's an anchor for the wiring harness , round hole for screw, square hole for harness clip snaps. There is a piece that gets removed from the old intake and you can screw this in its place. Not needed if you secured your wiring differently.

So i bit the bullet and purchased all of the individual parts from camelback toyota for my TRD intake. Total was around $230. My only real concern was the increased intake noise people have pointed out. I was pleasantly surprisesd. No increase noise is heard down low, on a little in mid range, but up high you can really hear it. It sounds good, nothing too crazy, but i can see why they wouldn't include a setup like this stock. I didn't really notice any power differences, but my 4runner usually sits in the garage for a week or two at a time, so i can't make a great comparison.

I was curious aobut the difference in airboxes and whether the stock bottom airbox could be used with the TRD top, so i took some pictures and measurements while it was apart.

Profile difference of the top of the airbox along with the difference in the location of the hole leading to the engine intake.

The airbox bottoms. The TRD lid will NOT fit on the stock bottom, mostly due to them being clamped on opposite sides.
TRD is on the left, stock is on the right

stock airbox inlet. The shield is most likely there to help shield water and debris from getting into the airbox as easily from the wheel well.

Stock airbox inlet, shield/duct removed. Notice how it necks down the airflow, almost like a venturi

Same intake, but from inside the airbox

How the TRD air accelerator will look when installed.

Just some observations i saw and figured may be interesting to others. Is it worth the money? Probably not. I like the sound though. I am curious to see how quickly the airfilter gets dirty, the stock airbox already had some sand in the bottom and i'm at 4900 miles, and i'll be interested to see if the air restriction gauge is beneficial. I used the OEM air filter BTW.

My 4runner is my DD and did notice mild throttle response gain. A bit better than my stock tires did before 285/70/17s. You might want to try a K&N air filter. I had one in my stock box and now in the TRD box. Its a little more up front, however the filter is washable so eventually it will even out.

Yes. Seems the computer just needs to learn "it". I dropped from 18.2 to 13.1, was pissed. BUT took my TRD 4Runner almost 5K from original purchase to get to where my LE had been.
So I told myself will give 1 month if no improvement from 13.1 it was gonzo. All worked out, mow back to the 18 arena.

Drove 40miles and now its in the 17.4mpg range. Guess the ECU needs to learn the CAI.

Good to know I'm not the only. Noticed about a 2 mpg loss on a roughly 670 mile road trip. Hopefully, it comes back up.
