I want to run 34s

I currently have 285/70 Duratracs (54lbs) and really like them. But being obsessed like I am with having more capability, I'm itching to run a little bigger tire.

Here is a quick size conversion rundown.
285/70R17 = 32.7x11.2
285/75R17 = 33.8x11
305/70R17 = 33.8x12
315/70R17 = 34.4x12.4

I have 8" rims, so 315s are out (plus they would probably rub too much anyway).

I want a 285/75 or 305/70. However, I have only found mud terrains so far and not sure I want to go any louder than my Duratracs. A Duratrac in in the right size would be a no brainer.

This is what I have found so far:
305/70 BFG KM2 (64lbs)
285/75 BFG KM2 (62lbs)
305/70 Goodyear MT/R (64lbs)

Any other decent tires in these sizes....?

I am going to get the Nitto Trail Grapplers in 285/75x17 once my Duratracs wear a bit more. Most likely after Death Valley since I have chunked them a lot and starting to cup a little.

Not sure of the weight.

For 285/75 17: Toyo MT(70.1lbs) and AT2 Extreme(63.1lbs), BFG KM2's(62.48lbs) and Nitto Trail Grapplers(68.3lbs). The AT2's and the KM2's are going to be the lighter options by a fair margin, as well as a fair bit quieter.

For the 305/70 17 you're looking at the MT/R and the KM2, both being the same weight as you've listed above.

If you want the larger sidewall but not the section width, go with the 285/75. The 8" wheel sits right in the middle of the width range for this size.

If you want the section width, and the rubbing that's almost certainly going to go with it, then go with a 305/70. I'm planning on this size for my next set of tires, but I will be increasing the lift a bit, as well as adding a front bumper and doing a bit of work to the front fenderwell areas(that's on top of the BMC, front lining push, mudflap removal and caster adjustments that have already been done), and adding a long travel kit with bump stop extensions in the rear.
When you look at it on paper, it doesn't seem like the 305/70 is going to be that much bigger than a 285/70, but when you get them on the vehicle there is a significant difference.

IIRC, Harper was running 305s and complained of rubbing on the rear fender flares at full stuff.

MTRs or KM2 are going to (eventually) be a lot louder than the Duratracs. MTRs at least, start out sounding similar to a worn out set of Duratracs, then get much, much louder as time goes on. It seems to be worst on extremely smooth, recently re-paved roads at higher speeds, makes a "WA!-WA!-WA!!-WA!!!" noise that takes 20+ on the radio to begin to drown out, but not bad on old worn out concrete and weathered chip seal surfaces. Off road they absolutely kick ass, though.

What are your rim specs? Even with 285/75/17, you're going to have to cut the body mount (if you haven't already), hammer the pinch seam, etc, granted at high caster with UCAs and a steel bumper for clearance at the front.

How are you liking those 4.56 gears, anyway? Broken in yet?

Hope they're not too much for the 285/70/17 Duratracs. Switching from the 285/70/17 Duratracs to MTRs (actually measure a good bit taller) is what pushed me from living with the 3.73s to going 4.56.

i have 285/75x17s and if you really truly want to run them, you also need to invest in a pair of balls and some tools if you haven't ever cut into your vehicle before.

you will HAVE to chop the front body mount, remove nearly all the plastic fender liners, make serious cuts into the front bumper plastics if you haven't already gone with an aftermarket, get deeper offset wheels and/or wheel spacers and stomach your tires forever rubbing your firewall/wheel well unless you want to get chopping. as well properly extend your bump stops.

all that said, i hate my 285s and will promptly be going to 35x12.50R17's this summer :)

Just out of curiosity, what kind of capability do you expect to gain going to a 34? I'm running 285/70/17 MT/Rs and had to do the bmc, lots of liner cutting, hammering the pinch weld, and moving the caster forward. I still popped the top of one of my front liners with the tire, and when this picture was taken the tire broke some of the trim at the front of the rear wheel well - was such a loud pop when it happened I thought it was a lot worse.

Please tell me, I'm not the only one who has 2 angle grinders because I was tired of wasting time, switching between the cutting wheel and flap wheel.

I like my 34s better than the 33s with the 4.56 gears. However, I do ache for real 35s like marshal. I think you would do fine with any 285/75 or the 305/70 if you are willing to double fist the angle grinders with Jeremy556! I want to SAS and go to 35s but have tons of work to get there. 35s could go now but I'd probably limit up travel with air bump stops. Fenders might be sacrificed but I want some new front ones anyway!

The gears are great, not broken in yet (about 100mi to go). They are not too much.

And to the others, I'm not afraid to cut.... Fenders are already pushed way forward as is the caster... I'm getting a bumper soon and I'm not afraid to do the body mount chop. I might have to stick with the 33s until I get the bumper, though.

Rim specs are 17x8 0 offset. No rubbing at all now and I have the front sway bar removed and the rear is still on, but with extended links.

I eventually plan to do LT in the rear and extended up front (after the bumper).

that's a good plan. Makes it so much better and easier with a front bumper.

km2's are very light, very quiet, decent wearing tires - however, they specialize in sucking in the rain more than any MT I've ever experienced. they're also grossly undersized on every rating. a 35" Km2 is really a 33" tire.

I run the old TA/KO in a 275/65/20 34.1 and really like them. I have cut and chopped and castered to make it happen. I would not go back and want to regear and get the 287/75/17 km2 myself after mine wear down.

I haven't ran 34s on a 4runner but I have installed that size on quite a few full size trucks. I can tell you the 285/75/17 Toyos, both AT and MT, are every bit as tall as a 315/70/17. Toyo also makes a 285/70/18 that is a 34" tire and a 285/75/18 that is a true 35" tire. These are great for those of us that don't want a wide tire. I had the Toyo ATs with the extreme tread on my F150. The one thing that surprised my about them was they were MT loud over 60 mph. They did have good traction in all kinds of terrain though.

Honestly, I've been thinking of going with either the 34/10.50/17 BFG KO2 or the Cooper ST Maxx 255/80/17s on TRDP wheels on both 4runners.
