I want to run 34s

I haven't ran 34s on a 4runner but I have installed that size on quite a few full size trucks. I can tell you the 285/75/17 Toyos, both AT and MT, are every bit as tall as a 315/70/17. Toyo also makes a 285/70/18 that is a 34" tire and a 285/75/18 that is a true 35" tire. These are great for those of us that don't want a wide tire. I had the Toyo ATs with the extreme tread on my F150. The one thing that surprised my about them was they were MT loud over 60 mph. They did have good traction in all kinds of terrain though.

Honestly, I've been thinking of going with either the 34/10.50/17 BFG KO2 or the Cooper ST Maxx 255/80/17s on TRDP wheels on both 4runners.

So what is the metric size of the 34/10.5 K02? Those are not out yet, right?

I really just want a measured 34x11, but I'm guessing 10.5 would be fine.

Apparently the 285/75R17's are on national back order (min. 30 days). I just picked up the last 4 from TiresDirect.net. Was hoping for 5, so I am going to have to try to source the last one from another source

I'm guessing the metric equivalent would be a 265/80/17. I think they are being released in March 2015.

How are you liking those 4.56 gears, anyway? Broken in yet?

Hope they're not too much for the 285/70/17 Duratracs. Switching from the 285/70/17 Duratracs to MTRs (actually measure a good bit taller) is what pushed me from living with the 3.73s to going 4.56.

And just to elaborate on this. I measured today with my current tires.

60 MPH - 2025rpm
70 MPH - 2380rpm
75 MPH - 2530rpm
80 MPH - 2700rpm

It mgiht get a little old at 80mph, but I have not done any long trips yet (I'm still breaking them in and tying to stay below 70). A 34" tire would knock those number down by about 100rpm.

Overall, I love the gears. The truck feels like it has about 25% more power everywhere. It actually gets up and goes quite well now and the shifts feel great. 4->5 is still meh. It no longer downshifts to 4th now on hills when maintaining 65-70mph.

MPG has dropped about 1 or 2 MPG so far, but I've been running in 4H as much as possible (~50%) to break things in.

I'm anxious to get out in 4L after the break in and feel the crawl speed and lockers.

The 4Runner has the 3 inch Metal Tech long travel it with Icon 2.5's 285/70/17 Duratracs and the 80 has 4 inch kit with 37" MTR's.

km2's are very light, very quiet, decent wearing tires - however, they specialize in sucking in the rain more than any MT I've ever experienced. they're also grossly undersized on every rating. a 35" Km2 is really a 33" tire.

No factory siping definitely equals crappy rain/snow performance. I had Discount sipe mine, made a huge difference. But they're probably wearing faster because of it.

imo for the amount you pay for BFG's pride, you shouldn't have to invest more time/money in siping them to get them to perform the way they should, and thats beyond the fact that their tires are not even close to being true to their size. all I'm saying is that there are "better" options out there for less or equal money.

don't get me wrong, my KM2's did great offroad and i was happy with their other characteristics, knowing full well going in the thin sidewalls - and in my opinion are the best looking tire out there. i just wouldn't give BFG my money ever again.

Yes, siping helps them in these areas (siping helps most tires gain wet/icy traction) but at the cost of tread life sometimes. After all, they are a mud tire.

I'm running 285/70/17 duratracs now, and run MTR's in the same size in the summer. I don't have any of the rubbing issues that others describe and have only done the liner mod and minor mud flap trimming. I do run +4 caster on Total Chaos UCA's.
I would caution you that the MTR's are quite loud, and I only have about 10,000 km on mine. They are very capable though, and have yet to let me down on the trail

the toyo MT's are the heaviest tire out there, absolutely murdering your milage. as you well know, every tire has its merits and its disadvantages.

personally my favorite Mud terrain/max traction tire out there is the General Grabber Red Label. its not too heavy, but it wears like iron. the lugs are deep, and clean well in mud. they are not siped, but the tread block pattern allows for easy water escape. they're pretty quiet, reasonably priced, true size and are fashionable. its one of those cases that it doesn't do one thing particularly well, but it does all categories

my runner up is the Toyo MT as well. fantastic tire if you can put up with the weight.
