Immobilizer/transponder? Please explain

Hi guys,
Can someone please explain what the cars immobilizer does and why I need the transponder key? I’ve tried searching but couldn’t find a clear explanation.

How come I can start my car with the metal spare key and even the copy key that obviously has no transponder? What is the point of it and the immobilizer than?

If you can start your 4Runner with an all-metal key, you don't have the immobilizer system. The immobilizer was only on the Limited trim from '99-'02.

That's exactly what I figured out from reading other threads. I was confused because the local dealer told me I do have it installed based on my vin number. I called another local dealer and they told me they don't have access to that information from the vin number.

I'm just going with I don't have it.
