iPad Car Mount?

Has anyone found a good way to mount an iPad in their 4Runner? I'm looking for a solution that doesn't require a windshield mount or anything that just sits on the dash.

I take a lot of long road trips and would love to use my iPad mini for directions and a bigger screen in general would help. I was looking into one of the Apple CarPlay head units but that's more than I'm looking to spend.

I just modded one for my truck but not for the 4runner.

Thats exactly what Im trying to accomplish. What mount did you start with and howd you modify it?

This is exactly what I bought see below link. Then, messing around with it in the truck to figure out a good place to mount. Luckly, I found some metal bracket, drilled two holes, tapped some 1/4-20 thread for the two stainless steel button heads screws.

I put one in my new JKU Rubicon Hard Rock a couple months ago and put it through some intense off road use at Big Bend National Park over Thanksgiving weekend holding an iPhone 6s. They both did really well, both the iPhone holder and the Jeep lol. Vibration minimal with the mount on road and off, but with a phone not a tablet. Yes I've gone to the dark side with a Wrangler but still have the 4Runner.

Picked up one for my S6 Edge Plus. It mounts via suction cup very sturdy right below the hazard button. On my Armada I put it on the windshield. It's double jointed.

I've had really good luck with Arkon phone mounts.

Is 18" long enough to clear the center console? I would get out there with a tape measure but it's only 2* out.

I liked it enough in my Jeep that I put one in the 4Runner today. That's it with an iPhone 7Plus.

Thanks for the pics.

I got it last week and installed it on the passenger's side. It's pretty wobbly. I'm not sure it got more stable with the phone in it (HTC One A9). I'm heading to the mountains next week so I'll see what it's like over a 120 mile drive using it the entire time.

Tighten the three places I added arrows with a wrench, and put loctite on the two little bottom bolts. A small wrench works better than a screw driver on those bottom ones after they're in all the way.

Thanks for the info. Clearly it would have been best to tighten those while it was off the car, but I gave it the ol' college try anyway.

The big nut didn't budge, but the two screws had plenty of travel before they tightened up. It looks a lot firmer now. I guess I'll find out on my way to the mountains tomorrow.

Here's how I just mounted my RAM mount on my dash for my Nexus 7 and Nexus 6P:

The iPad might be a little larger but you could easily bump up to the larger RAM mount size without issue. I used to have a older iPad mounted with the seat bolt mount in my 3rd Gen 4Runner, but found it always vibrating and moving around once out on the trails. My new setup is WAY more stable.
