We just picked up a 2000 T4R with 209K on it. The price was right, as was the connection with the seller, and so we embark on an adventure. We just moved from SoCal with a 1999 2wd F-150 (80K), and we were looking for a vehicle primarily for 4-season fishing adventures in the backcountry of Maine and surrounding areas. Here are some initial pictures. The only additions since these pictures were taken are a full set of WeatherTech FloorLiner™ DigitalFit® 1st and 2nd row grey floor mats ($169.90) and a ScanGauge II ($159.95), so this isn't much of a build yet, but hey! We'll get 'er done. :-)

so did the previous owner throw in a sink? haha or did you buy the sink and it came with the truck? congrats on the buy! im sure the move/ drive from cali to maine was a heck of a trip! what do you have planned for this ride?

Everything AND the kitchen sink, right?! :-) The sink pick-up was the first job for the T4R. The drive across country was long (with trailer and two cats!), but it was good, and we're loving our new diggs. We're also loving the 4Runner so far. The MPG estimate on the ScanGauge after a couple trips suggests we're in the ballpark for where we want to be, but we'll go over her with a fine tooth comb this coming week. First major mods will probably be front and rear bumper (although it's a shame, as the previous owner replaced the chrome within the past year). The console/cluster lights are out, so I'll probably address that first. If she was yours, what would you do first?
 
well im a clean freak so i would clean EVERYTHING. but i noticed you have quite a bit of snow so outside cleaning might not be the easiest thing. other than that ii would go over it top to bottom and look at it to see if there is anything i need replaced.

Yea...we're into snow and cold for the next bunch of weeks, but I'm going to get it into a garage on Tuesday and have a good look. I suspect there will be a long and distinguished list on which to follow-up after really divig in. :-)

Thanks! We're pretty jazzed. I think we're looking at going with the Shrockrocks front and rear bumper unless we hear compelling reasons to do otherwise. What are your front bumper light recommendations?

Are you set on the Shrockworks? If not, have you checked out the Outdoor Logic bumper? It's very similar to the Shrockworks, cheaper and I hear it's built like a tank too.

We're not set on anything in stone yet--just trying to create a budget that will have us fishing streams in the west and far north this spring. I'll take a look at Outdoor Logic. Thanks for that!
 
So we've noticed she pulls to the right when breaking, and I think we now know it is the left front caliper to blame. It's been messed with somewhat recently, as the bolts are wrong. One was not tight and crossthreaded. Also the rust in-and-of-itself is pointing to a need for a caliper replacement. So a new caliper is first on the grocery list, probably followed by work on the rear pinion bearing (cause of the grinding sound when braking?). So I guess we're looking at about $350 or so on parts. Also, the 750CCA battery is coming in at 528, so another c-note there, I suppose. Then it's on to the cluster lights, heater control lights and shifter lights...and then the bumpers!

Since your buying new calipers, you might as well just do the 231mm tundra brake upgrade. Just order (2) calipers from an 06 tundra, rotors and pads and you're good to go.

Sounds like I need to research the 231mm tundra brake upgrade. Pros and cons?

No cons, all pros lol. Bigger brakes = better stopping power. Should be right around the same price as buying new calipers, rotors and pads for the 4runner.

Thanks. I'm doing my due diligence now. Expanding the job from a single caliper to calipers, rotors and pads may be a financial deterrent, especially with the pinion issue pending, but we are seriously looking into this.
 
Well she doesn't look a whole lot different from external shots today, but she's a whole lot better to drive!

New battery, all belts tightened and adjusted, new pinion bearing, and new brake calipers and break pads. Phew. We thought we were just getting into the left break caliper and replacing the caliper and cross-threaded bolts, but then we saw the inner pad was worn out, so that led to new pads, which led to exploding the right caliper and...you guessed it...the caliper pistons were stuck, so we replaced that caliper too (along with the pads, obviously).

Also the new WeatherTec cargo mat arrived today.

Still have not resolved the cluster and console light issue...
 
So she came with Dunlop Rover H/T - P265/70R16 all season tires, and we're looking to switch it up. Our needs? Plenty of dirt roads, some true off-road and the highway miles to get us to the dirt. Bottom line: this is a fishing vehicle, but we need to cover some road miles in it as well. Suggestions?
