JBL subwoofer rattle (or blown)

My stock JBL subwoofer is making a rattling noise, sounds like it could be blown but I'm hoping it's just something lose back there. I haven't had time to take the trim of yet and check it out, I just wanted to see it this was at all common or it i'm alone on this one?

Mine did the same thing, sub was blown. Check the write-up in my sig for info on replacing it.

Dam I was hoping for a different response lol since I don't have much spare cash right now (and any spare cash I do have will go to winter tires + rims pretty soon) I think I might just disconnect it since it's really annoying!

So I finally got around to removing my sub to track down this rattle. It turns that of course is was blown but upgrading the sound system isn't on my priority list, I thought I would take a stab a fixing it. It's not that I'm cheap I would just rather spend the money on an exhaust system or beefy tires. I'm not sure how long it will last but for now it works great, 100% rattle free!

The only thing required to fix it was time and silicone. Heres some pics

Not sure on correct terminology but you can see where it's seperated but shouldn't be.

Here the old sub in my corolla which is where I got the idea for this one. I fix this one when I was a poor college student, it really suprised me how well it worked.

Thats a good fix. Next time, i would suggest a thin layer of some fast acting epoxy and then the silicon. Thats what I used to fix my old subwoofer.

Thanks for the tip, did it take lots of abuse? I only had my mtx siliconed for a couple months and then bought my 4runner so the only thing I can't really attest to is how long the silicone repair will last. My hopes are it goes a year or so until I upgraded the sound system.

The silicon will eventually wear and come apart. The epoxy acts as a harder base to hold everything together.

Nice fix, didn't even think of that one. Definitely save up the funds to replace it when you can, I had a cone get cracked on my old 4R and I couldn't STAND the way it sounded....terrible haha. I feel your pain!!

Just an update for anyone who wants to fix their stock sub. The silicone is still holding up after almost a year.

Definitely a fix worth the time!

i have JBL system and NEVER hear my subwoofer. Maybe i should pop the panel off and check things out.

No thats normal LOL. If you hear it rattle then it's blown, if your hear nothing, its working perfectly .

Truthfully enough its not the best sound system, an aftermarket headunit will help but you best bet is to upgrade the sub. When I turn up the volume in mine, I just end up hearing more bass from the 6x9's up front and its no different if your sitting in the back, I'd like to install a little sub in the stock enclosure one day though

I have a practically new factory sub driver out of my '05 Limited from when i replaced the whole system back in the day if anyone is interested. It had been in my car only a year when it was taken out.
