Good to see members here are free and able to leave a sh$t comment because folks like John McCain SERVED their country.
No leader is perfect. I would say McCain was quite a few notches above the pack.
And your comment about him “filling his own pocket books” on the wars ... you are implying he took money for America getting involved. That is a pretty serious slander. Last I check McCain served the people who elected him and was not corrupt.
On a side note, it should be possible to honor the Senator without discussing politics, since politics is banned. Best of luck.

You're right man, instead of serving in the military or say reading an actual newspaper or actual book I should go on Youtube, a free service (where the consumer IS the product) funded by an monopolistic advertising company named Alphabet to learn the truth about our [flat?] world.
I'll go cancel my WashPo subscription and Audible account right now. Why should I read any more history books after all when I can just get my reality from tweets or youtube folks.

Amazing how quickly this thread turned.
I don't give a sh*t what you think of his politics. The man was shot down (broke several bones on the ejection alone) and then spent 5 and a half years (two in solitary) in captivity. That alone should garner your upmost respects.

I'm fairly new to here, but I think we need to keep political fighting out of Toyota-4Runner.org. This isn't Facebook, but fighting like that sure makes it seem like it is. I bailed out of FB 5 years ago because I got tired of that crap.
I personally see no problem paying respects, but that's where it should end. Getting into an argument with another member isn't what we're here for.

I give condolences to his family in these times.
Not Corrupt? Come on. Read up on the Keating 5, not wiki version but the real story. I and thousands of others like you and me lost thousands of dollars some their life savings because of him and others like him. Wasn't history for me, I was there.
Karma got his azz in the end, a befitting end at that.
He doesn't get a pass for his behavior after his military service, particularly as a politician. But I respect that he did serve and the way he handled being a POW. As I get older, I am less interested in focusing on the negative after someone passes. He suffered far more than the rest of us in life, may he rest in peace.

John McCain' was a good man, a patriot who loved his country but nevertheless a mortal human being who make mistakes but his life experience and achievement as a serviceman, pow, a politician and a family man arguably is greater then most Americans and therefore undoubtedly part of the few good American club.
He said in his last speech.

Keating scandal occured before the modern internet. Many people have never heard of it. I have not read a full account of it yet. Keating barely became a news item during the 08' election.

Yes it did, why I said it wasn't history for me.
My stepfather was Assistant SecDef in that era. I know what Def Dept's feelings were then, they respected his father and grandfather ended there.
McCain served his country it ends there, all I've got to say about it.

Yep, this topic was so long ago and never resulted in official finding that a crime was committed. Books have been written and it was studied extensively.
Generally speaking, to tear someone down who served their country with more honor and distinction than Most folks here have and to say a man is a crook when he actually isn't, well that is pretty low.
Like internet Tough Guys, there are internet Patriots. John McCain was an actual Patriot, independent of politics.

He was at times honorable and someone to despise, but that would apply to most of our political figures. In the end I think the good outweighed the bad and I am sorry for His family. He is surely better off now as Glioblastoma is a hideous thing to endure for all involved.:usa:

I'm not a mod but my personal take on "no politics" is don't make it political. Your comment, which I view as gross (I won't even bother to ask if you ever served) is not purely political so it would pass my test.
I am using the same logic that allows the guns threads to stand in /off-topic/ because discussing individual guns is not by itself political and those threads are still going.
But it is a sad day if we can't even have respect for those who served America without going for the political jugular. Like I said earlier the internet is full of Keyboard Patriots and little men who act tall behind the keyboard. John McCain served his country (US Navy) with honor and distinction and that is something that can be recognized independent of politics because it was not political.
