Just bought a 2015 Trail Premium. What should my first upgrades be?

Move the exhaust to side. Fairly cheap to do. Makes a huge difference if you like riding with your rear window open.

I have zero issues running with my window down and having a rear exhaust exit. What's the issue other people are having? I looked at some of the rigs with side exit and the look is not for me that's for sure. I suppose if I was having whatever issue some others are having I would reconsider.. but it would have to be a fairly big issue.

Cat converter rotten egg smell. Next time you go out try this: Start it up and roll your rear window down. Drive sedately for a minute or two, then floor it like you stole it up to 70 mph. I guarantee you will get the rotten egg smell.
With that said, once the cats get up to temp you won't get that smell again until you are pushing it hard for some time, like climbing a mountain. I have driven several hundred miles with my rear window down with no issues but if you do the above like I said you will get the smell every time.

Best first mod? Throw a few thousand miles on the odometer.
Once you've done that, throw mods on that you think it needs. My first mod was to remove my running boards on my 4th gen. After I ruined a pair of khakis from road salt buildup on the damn things they were gone within a day.

My first 'Mod' was paint protection and all-weather mats..a full detail including clay baring and soon a ceramic coating. Anything to help keep the vehicle protected from the shit that goes on out there.
Next is sliders and possibly emblems. Have not decided whether or not I want to tint the front windows.
A lift will happen next year more than likely and lastly a rack.
Some type of lighting upgrade as well.
I notice when I take my time and think long and hard about the mods that things come together a little better then when I try to rush it often having a clash in looks or function.

My first mod is always tires. Tires will change the performance of a vehicle more than anything else, because it's literally where the rubber meets the road. The 4runner is a pretty capable vehicle, throw some good offroad tires on it and see what it can do a couple times before deciding what you need next.
Of course I don't consider things like rubber floor mats, and a rubber cargo liner really "mods." Those are things that I purchase the day I buy every new vehicle. As well as the center console organizer - but a must have.

I can agree with you on the back mat, nothing special there. However, the passenger area mats are amazing. My truck would be trashed already without them and they fit like a glove.

Winter tires !!!
My new 16' Trail Edition (I am in Canada) is 3 weeks away. First and only things I am going to buy for now are mats and Nokian Hakkapelita R2 to be ready for the Yukon winter!

The first thing I did when I got my new-to-me 2010 was to put weathertech floor liners and cargo liner in. Big fan of the floor liners, and the cargo liner is decent.
Yer looking in the wrong place if you are seeking consensus! Do whatever YOU want to do to make it your own.

Nfab's look great. I'm not much of a modder. Just did the TRD Skid plate, nfab bars and net to keep me from crying over spilt milk.

There is quite a bit of useful info in this thread. I agree with the others that say to spend some more time behind the wheel on some mild trails learning how the vehicle handles and where it is capable of going. With that said, recovery points, possibly a winch, rock sliders and skids are always a good place to start. Those are the basics that are important to have in any off-road situation whether its a mild back road or something more challenging.

Because of the heat? I got a Trail Premium the end of July and have had absolutely no problems with the softex seats getting hot. They got a little warmer before I had the windows tinted and user a weathertech sun shade, but definitely not leather hot.
OP:
Since your in the valley, I would recommend getting your windows tinted and use a good sun shade. It has made a huge difference for me as far as reducing the inside temperature after sitting in the sun.

Windows are already tinted, front included. I might want to go darker though. Just not sure how I feel about much darker at night
