I am new to the site. I have been reading the myriad of threads on tire and wheels for the last week or so. I bought a 2015 4Runner SR5 Premium and I want to upgrade the tires and wheels. Want to make sure I got all this right. After reading more threads than I can count I think I have it boiled down to:

285/65-R17 tires, 9" wheels with -6mm offset. And to pull that off I will need at least a 3/2 lift or a 2/1 lift. Will this work? Am I missing anything (careful my wife has already filled me in on that) else? Will this rub or stick out too far? Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

One last bit of info, I drive 40-50K per year, mostly highway but hit the trails in CO when I get the chance. Need a cool aggressive tire that is good in snow but not too noisy. What do you suggest?

I would say you are good depending on the tire. There are guys running a 285/70x17 (which is slightly bigger then the size you listed) with no lift and only needed to do the fender mod.

Then there are guys running the same size tire (different tire of course) with basically a 3/2 and they are rubbing.

What does it come down to....wheel dimension, tire types/size, and alignment.

Seeing your wheel specs, which are similar to mine. I would say you will be good with a minor lift and fender mod with any tire selection. My tire recommendation would be the REVO II. Solid AT tire that is not loud and looks good. You will get good life out of them and they do well in all conditions.

Go for it and see what happens.

The Revo II isn't available in this size. Anyone else suggest a tire this size?

Did you look at the chart in the FAQ stickies on tire fitment?
You somehow chose a tire size that has a whopping three choices on tire rack!
The only real difference between the one you chose and the stock 265/70/17 is the section width (not tread width) is around 3/4" of an inch wider. Circumference is about the same too. As a matter of fact if you run the size you listed I think you will be the first one here to do so lol. Oh, you don't need to lift it for that tire.

With the 4Runner, the further you take the CL of a wheel away from the vehicle (move it out away from the hub) the higher the chances of rubbing especially during full lock and compression off road. You want to stay as close to the stock wheel configuration as you can.

You can also check out Online Wheel and Tyre Fitment Calculator. Offset, Tyre Stretch and Speedo Error | Will They Fit and compare the stock size vs. what you are planning to run. (It's set in the link for 285's vs. the stock TE wheels/tires. I'm going with a 17x9 with a -12mm offset and the inset is actually a little bit less, so the additional width is poking out towards the fenders. I would think that is a good sign for rubbing while at full lock, but I would be concerned during full suspension compression if you don't have some sort of lift. That site it cool because it also provide a diagram showing how much bigger you propose size is vs stock.

Awesome. This helped a lot. I decided to go with 285/70-17 and live with the 3.5% difference on my speedometer. I am going with the-12mm offset and a 3/2 leveling kit. Thanks guys for the assist!
