I don't like my 2011 SR5 Upgrade either... let my wife push us into it... I've had 3 Tacoma's (1994, 2000, 2006) and we should have hung on to the Tacoma or waited for the new one... When you are used to a longer wheelbase, the 4Runner does seem skittery... I find it takes a lot more attention to keep it going straight. I live in big mountains with big snow, and it's a handful... and yes, I have ice tires with studs...

It's Salsa Red Pearl, black leather, 2 sets of factory Toyota wheels... 5,000km, and in the BC interior if anyone wants to buy it... I think I'd prefer a Sequoia of Tundra... Weathertech mats and cargo liner... the rest is just stock...

The V8 4R 4th gen was a fantastic value from Toyota due to the near identical drive train to that of the 100(engine + trans) AND 200 (VF4 transfer case) series Land Cruisers.

The 4.6L V8 6 speed wasn't too good for the Tundra's and should have been an option in the 4Runners IMO. I've e-mailed Toyota complaining about it several times now. That's the ONLY way they will know. Toyota Help

Iron blocks are pretty much ancient technology these days. Not that they are bad, but newer technology is putting aluminum blocks and heads with plastic intake manifolds on most new engines, yes even V8 engines. Look at the new 5.0 Ford engine. It's a fantastic engine and it's all aluminum with a plastic intake manifold. Just like the 4Runner V6 engine.

Iron blocks will soon be a relic like caburetors and spark plug wires.

2nd. The rear defrosted was horrible on my 06 4R , but this one takes the cake ! it can't even melt a dusting of snow off the back window. It really stinks.

3rd. Heater/blower motor is a total joke too. Not much power/CFM there in my opinion.

4. The button for the windshield wiper/heater thing ??? does not seem to have any purpose what so ever . what is it supposed to do ??? I have read the manual .

7. I do miss having a full time 4x4 mode with center locking diff like my 06 had . I drove on friday nite on the freeway for about an hour to get home. Road had about inch of snow dust in them . After the traction control was doing its job I decided to put it in 4wd/Hi the rest of the way home . The truck was all over the place on the road .

8. Engine : I miss my V8 with a passion !!!! This current 11TE truck is a dog from the get go , even though it is supposed to have a whopping 5 more hp than the V8. The 4.7L V8 power and torque were excellent , engine ran totally smooth and quiet. Gas milage is so far the same as my V8. Although though I don't buy these kind of vehicles for gas milage at ALL. Im sure in time of break in it will go up a mile or so per gallon. As long as I'm not getting 12mpg ....lol Im ok with it . I think im at 15.5 average (mostly city stop and go) running winter blend fuel (which takes away a couple miles per gallon and makes it run crappier too). so who knows with milage . it may get better but not overly concerned . I just thought with the new 4L it would be better power and milage & quieter.

2 - The rear defroster DOES NOT WORK in cold weather. It's been averaging -20c for about 3 months now and the defroster on my 4R is completely useless. The side mirror defrosters work great, but the rear window one is useless in real cold weather. If it's just below freezing, the rear defroster does work. If it's well below freezing, forget it.

3 - The fan on my 4R seems weak as well. It's acceptable though.

4 - It's an almost useless feature. I can not remember ever having windshield wiper blades freeze to my windshield - even after a car wash. Only 1 time did I have a bunch of frozen snow that buried my wipers and it was like they were encased in cement. This one time this feature actually did something. However there was still a bunch of ice stuck on the blades so although they were freed, they were not useful for wiping the windshield.

7 - I don't care for part time 4wd myself and would rather have a full time system. Our winters here create different road conditions where it's icy one street and then near dry the next. It's embarrassing to spin the rear wheels trying to get moving (from a stop) and I have to quick shift into 4wd and then back to 2wd. I have GY SA's on my 4R, not the stock tires.

8 - It should get better. My 4R felt completely anemic for the first few thousands kilometers. I have almost 9K on mine now.

My biggest fear is that vehicles for sale today are starting to see the kind of built in obsolescence we have been experiencing for years in other industries, all in the name of better efficiency and more features (but in reality in order to cut costs and maintain a certain price point).

Household appliances for instance were at one time a once in a lifetime purchase - now you find yourself replacing them every 5-7 years because of some '"high-tech" part failing. The issue is so prevalent in that industry that you cannot even pay more to get something that lasts longer.

I really do hope that Toyota does start to look back at its core values and refocus on longevity of its product, even if that means pushing prices up - (the domestics fought on price and look how that ended up).

Bringing in the 5th Gen at the same price or less than the 4th Gen tells you costs have been cut somewhere, I just hope its in features not quality.

Spark plug wires and carburetors still work too. But I wouldn't want them on a new vehicle I'm buying because they are old technology and have been replaced by newer technology. Same thing for the old iron block/aluminum head engines.

Comparing household appliances and motor vehicles doesn't make much sense. The fact of the matter is that newer vehicles are built to last much longer than older vehicles. Years ago, 100,000 miles out of a car was pretty much it. After that, you were spending a lot of money in repairs to keep the car on the road. Today, 100,000 miles is nothing on a modern car. These "hi-tech" cars not only last longer, but they're also far more reliable with much fewer maintenance items that have to be replaced. A typical tune-up today is nothing but replacing the spark plugs (and not until 100,000 miles on a lot of vehicles) and the air filter. Think about it.

I really do hope that Toyota does start to look back at its core values and refocus on longevity of its product, even if that means pushing prices up - (the domestics fought on price and look how that ended up).

I don't think the 5th gen had anything cut in terms of quality. Features? Absolutely. But quality? I don't see anything at all.
