Keaton's 1993 Toyota 4Runner

it has been a bit since I've posted, but I promise, it is worth the wait. So a while back (Late Jan) I PM'ed a dude on Yotatech parting a 94 out about 5 hours west of me. Long story short, and a nice drive later, I was in a field with two 4runners, one (parts rig) was sitting with all the windows rolled down, another very nice tan one we had access to just incase stuff we needed was missing from the parts rig. I got two nice front fenders that need a repaint but were other wise very straight somehow. Plus the front and rear bumper pieces I needed, a makeshift antenna, the antenna motor, lock solenoid, chrome running boards (I'm a sucker for chrome OEM), some misc interior components that were only available on eFlay for silly prices. Two days before that, another dude up in Hot Springs had some free interior panels. Although tan, they were free and could be repainted fairly easily.

Cue my driveway with parts!

Before V6 grille, falling out (!!!) side indicators, and the floppy passenger side headlight:

After:

That left indicator is like that because of the frame being bent. Fender too far forward, it doesn't go back far enough because the door would catch it. Might do some backyard frame work. The passenger headlight has been busted for a while. It worked, just was cockeyed and would bounce. The brace was broken and the lense was bleech since a rock hit it. When the car was T-Boned, the grille was changed at some point since it was missing the pilot hole for the V6 badge, plus the chrome was flaking and the plastic braces were breaking too.

I then started work on the front bumper. I pressure washed all the crap off of it, and buffed the foggy spots:

And killing the rust behind it:

An hour later with the front bumper:

And with the rear bumper panel mine has had beat to death:

I did get that top dent out, thanks to a 2x4.

Also, from the parts vehicle, I got a nice set of rear leather seats:

Not sure how much I like them since the cloth is nice in the summer. If anyone close to the midsouth area wants some nice rear 2nd gen leather seats, shoot me an offer.

Tomorrow! Reattaching and cleaning running boards!

Finally! New bumper on. The passenger side mounts where pretty messed up, but a BFH changed their attitude. Plus, some extra pieces from the donor car helped where there were missing mounts (like the top most, rear bumper mount was gone!!)

Looks so much better:

There is still a small, bent section I need to fix on the bumper (compare blinkers). But, the top section where it meets the grille and side indicators is level, compared to my old bumper:

:biggrin1:

:biggrin1:

Also, new chrome running boards all around:

Used a toggle bolt, washers, and a ziptie to secure this trim piece until I repaint and install my new fenders:

Right now, I'm pursuing a front valiance, hood, and potentially a new rear bumper, all locally from a parts 4R posted yesterday. Oof. Almost regretting going 5 hrs west.

Long time no post! Nothing crazy here, I did replace the side markers bulbs with LEDs, and it made the car look much cooler at night:

IMG_1585 by keaton.burleson, on Flickr

I've got LED maplights and domelights, some new Hellas, an expansion valve, new wiper blades, and a glove box light all on order.

Still side-stepping the code 52 issue

So finally my nice little Mickey Mouse fix stopped working on my 4runner, so I just researched on eBay and bought the right parts, plus the coolant bypass hose I'm 95% sure is leaking in the back.

Doesn't look like all the parts will make it in time for the weekend sadly, but hopefully by next weekend I have the time to tear down and get cracking.

I made an interesting observation when I had the intake off last time, I measured the 'crush' seals new from the dealer v.s. the old, and there wasn't a comparable difference between them. I, of course, used a set of calipers, not a ruler :nerd:.

My last knock sensor connector from the harness to the wire going down into the block was destroyed, so I need to chop the new wire and make a new connector onto the new shielded wire I ran since my other one was a bit munched looking.

I did finally get my dome light working after a long time of it not working:

Getting ready for a fun cross country trip here at the end of May.

Anyway, this weekend I plan to knock out the knock sensor and the coolant leak, and potentially find the oil leak thats been a nice steady 0.8qt a month flow. I'm betting its the cam shaft seal rings, but I'm not sure why they'd be leaking.

Today on the way to work (30 mins highway) I noticed the runner vibrated more at the speeds that it normally vibrates at, and then from 70-80 MPH. Not exactly what I want to feel before going over two thousand miles.

Anyway, I aired up the tires, and cleaned out my glovebox:

I just noticed that you did the body work yourself. Looks good.

Running board does not belong on MOAB, though... LOL!

Best wishes on the road-trip! Those are fun!
Friend and I drove from New Jersey through Memphis, via I-40 / Route 66 to So cal last October, then I solo'ed So Cal to mid-point of Route 66 then down to Dallas last Christmas. Then back on southern corridor via 10 an 20 Fwys.

Near Santa Fe, NM, there's supposed to be a nice dirt section of Route 66 called the La Bajada Switchbacks. I did not try it because I was solo, and wasn't sure of the way.

I wonder if you had inspected your engine and transmission mounts.

Yeah, its just a bit off, the curve isn't quite right on the corner, but overall, its pretty good. That side was the side t-boned so I had the ability to get in there and fix some of their laziness.

I'm pretty excited. The longest journey I've done was Indianapolis so this is a bit of a leap. Should be fine though. For the past couple of months, the runner has been turn key->drive without issue.

I will check the transmission mounts, as I've already replaced the motor mounts this past summer.

I might try to stop by that! Looks beautiful.

BTW, THIS short section of non-technical dirt road between Santa Rosa and Cuervo, NM is really nice, too. I took it east-bound on my way to TX.

I have family in OKC, and in Amarillo, so I'm familiar with that area. If I could pick a place to live, it would be Amarillo, TX!

I will definitely go on that dirt road!! Thanks RAD!

So, you'll be proud of me and my multimeter!
Read to the end to find out!

I love me some OEM parts. I love the parts guy at my Toyota house. He was asking me today when I'm graduating, and even asked about plans ahead (told him about my trip). All around solid dude. Got me a parts acct. so my VIN and part history is saved in the computer. A week ago I ordered the map pouch clips:

...and my Knock sensor wiring harness connector.

The dealership wanted $20 a piece for the wires coming out, so I said no and took a gamble building my own. I found the right pins and seals from Ballenger.

I put the connecters in and I heard the lovely *BEEP* from my multimeter confirming the pins made contact.

Tomorrow the tear down begins. Hopefully I'll fix the rear coolant leak, the front oil leak, exhaust leak on passenger side, and replace the intake gaskets with metal ones. Lol.

and hopefully not break anything else..

Began tearing it down today, and called it quits because my back was hurting and I was out of patience setting the timing belt stuff back up. Heres the two non-hose related pics:

Could NOT find my oil leak! Everywhere was dry!

Hopefully tomorrow it'll be all back together and working again!

Good job! I hate automotive connectors. you never know which pins would match what connector housings. Glad you found some.

Oh no! More than what I'd like to tackle :) Maybe OK if the truck were not my DD so I can take my time. Good luck with the rebuild.

I had nothing to do over the weekend thank goodness. Everything worked electrically the first try! No KS code. The only thing its doing now is I have a coolant leak on the back, hitting the manifold and causing it to smell awful at times. Its coming from somewhere on the coolant bypass block, but its unclear. Still didn't find the oil leak, but I'm gonna wash the bottom of the engine out tomorrow to start checking again.

I'd suggest the oil cooler on the driver's side of the block, but that usually leaks down and back toward the transmission. Good luck with your search!

Check the oil pressure switch

Both good ideas, I'll check both. Its been minor enough not to worry me, just enough to be an annoyance. Well, any leak is an annoyance.

Still better than when I went to Indianapolis and had the rear cam seals leaking. Lost about 2 qts of oil..
