Keaton's 1993 Toyota 4Runner

Woo hoo! Finalizing stuff for my trip in a couple of days!

Alright! I'm almost to Amarillo. Car is LOOODED down haha.

We did manage to lose two of the bolts that hold the front tire to the bike which blows, but in Amarillo we're stopping and finding a bike shop.

Onward! Shaking and all.

Oh jeez I kinda forgot this thread. :behindsofa: My bad. So I made it safe back from my trip. I had to get towed once because the fan bearing seized on top of the Grand Canyon.

We started in Oklahoma City:

Drove almost through New Mexico:

Camped in Red Rock, NM:

Leaving New Mexico:

And headed for Flagstaff:

I want to live here:

As we climbed our MPG dropped and so did our power. We had a lot of gear but it was frustrating having to stop and advance timing to get more power. Ugh it was slow. Is the Supra intake worth it?

This was our best MPG after we leveled out:

Unfortunately on the Grand Canyon we had to get towed:

About to put the tensioner + fan bearing bracket back on:

Moab was 100% worth it:

Dead Horse Point was fantastic:

We stopped in Denver after driving through Vail. Was awesome too:

Then onto Pikes Peak:

I did finally get my fender painted and replaced:

Now I need to start a fund to get bigger tires.

One of my next projects is possibly a front bumper, though I want to finish restoring the interior.

Very nice! My family made it out to GC, Moab, Arches, Zion, and Bryce this spring. Was an incredible trip, but we flew and rented rather than driving it all. Your mileage is on par with what I'm getting. Mine has been geared up and has larger tires on it (by the previous owner) so I'm not sure what the power was like before. It's not stupendously powerful now though. ;) I don't think I'd want to be climbing hills out west with it as loaded as yours appeared to be.

Great thread, I'll keep watching your progress.

Yeah it is quite beautiful. I like flying, but I think the total cost of the trip between all of us was $600 total, which is about one ticket. Plus the journey is fun.

That was honestly the best milage I've seen out of this truck but it was slooow. What size tires are you running? Mine are so small my speedo is off and with my engine at 3.6k RPMs at 75MPH.

Yep, our trip wasn't nearly so cost effective, but we got to see a lot in 10 days. I'm running 31x10.5R15 tires currently. They are a fairly knobby off-brand tire. The previous owner told me he changed the diffs to 4.56 from 4.88. The door jamb indicates G144, which would be 4.88. My speedo is off about 5 MPH at highway speeds. When the GPS says it's doing 70 mph it's at about 2800 RPM and reading 65 mph on the speedometer. The diffs are also sporting fresh glossy black paint, so it all seems to correlate with what I was told. I'm calculating 14 mpg avg, but that's based on the mileage the odometer gives which should be low given the speedometer reading slower than actual.

You can replace the speedo gear and get the speedometer accurate.

I'm not sure I have one. My truck has a VSS at the output shaft of the transfer case and only electronic connections at the speedometer. I haven't done much digging on adjusting yet though.

Easily one of the most frustrating and expensive weekends of my life.

So I've been chasing down a shaking issue that was worsened with new tires.

I tried known good rims and tires, rebuilt my front end, put new shocks all around, new U-joints. Basically, I figure it can only be the axles. I go to pick a part, pull the axles and a few minor odds and ends (hose, oil cap, screws, single din trey, driver side vent). $67 total. I buy a press for $200. I buy bearings and seals for around $80. Spend two days getting it all together and same. damn. issue. FML. I removed the driveshaft and drove on the highway with out the rear engaged. Shaking severely reduced. The front end has always had a howl/vibration in 4WD on the highway but I figured it was normal. Gonna get the driveshaft balanced tomorrow. I'm beyond frustrated. I did fix the passenger side lock solenoid with one from the pick a fart but I BROKE THE DOOR HANDLE IN THE PROCESS. UGH! :yell::yell::yell::yell:

I will say, I really like the 31s:

After I finish chasing issues, I think I'll get a roof basket.

Update time.

I've been playing around with the shaking issue and got it down to a vibration by getting the tires ROAD FORCE balanced. Much better. I took it down to Elk City, OK and I only got ~14MPG which sucked. Sucked hard. Time for new injectors!

I have an amazing shortlist of things I want to get done but no time or finances to accomplish them. My biggest "ugh" beyond the vibration/shimmy on the highway is the stiffness of the suspension. The highway just beats you up, and where I live the roads are literal crap so its annoying to bounce around town with your interior falling apart. I need to disassemble the dash to replace the expansion valve and tighten it. I'll probably put some foam tape on the edges where it contacts so it doesn't rub and squeak.

Then I'll pull the carpet and pressure wash the stuff outta it. Then I'll get the driver's side seat repaired. Maybe.

I'm kinda set on a new bumper, like the ARB:
12.jpg

but thats crazy $$$!! I might see if I could weld my own, something like this:
kinda like this? by keaton.burleson, on Flickr

Anyway, this is the shot of the week:

IMG_1085 2 by keaton.burleson, on Flickr

Oh! I did get a cheap wally world roof basket. Not bad imho, I need to cut a Toyota logo on the right in the plastic. I got a third roof rack crossmember and re-enforced it, then used my bike rack one up front. So I have a basket and a bike mount. Cool!
I need to remove the running boards but I want front mud flaps first :P

I like the clean look of the ARB, the low-profile of the main bumper, and the extra protection from the bull-bar all the way to the corner.
Watching out for used ones on CL for my first-gen.

Yes. It also matches the style of our vehicles. Not a fan of most other ones, especially tube bumpers. The body lines work really well with it, and I believe that the 1st and 2nd gens have the _best_ body lines of any 4R. The 2nd gen looks like a spaceship imho.

So in more quests to make the suspension under the truck more solid, I've purchased the new mounts/bushings for the differential. Both mine are shot to sh*t. Pretty sure thats what the knocking sound is whenever I brake or accelerate. I'm hoping this will end my highway shaking and my 4WD vibration.

Still shakes. I'm really starting to be sure that its the frame, though I want to replace the trailing arm bushings on the rear. With a good, straight alignment, I'd think it wouldn't be the frame. And the fact that bigger tires made it shake worse makes me think something is just slightly out of round somewhere or something has a bit too much play and is just wreaking havoc on the rest of the car. Not sure.

Anyway, I installed the gray top Flamethrower injectors and that really helped the 3VZE along on the highway. Better MPG and passing was no longer terrifying.

Next things will probably be more cosmetic fixes, but besides the trailing arm bushings and the sway bay bushings/endlinks, I'd have just about replaced all the rubber underneath the truck..

I got into an interesting argument the other day: is the 2nd gen 4Runner a truck?

I'd argue no, as the 1st/2nd 4runner is basically a pickup with a covered bed. I've always heard it referred to as a truck. The 3rd gen was built off an SUV chassis, different from the Taco. What do y'all think? (about the shaking or the debate)

I've ordered and received body mounts from 4crawler--just waiting for the time to do it. Meanwhile, I received Denso plugs and wires along with 2nd gen OEM mud flaps.

Replaced the plugs and wires, adjusted the idle, and still waiting on a new O2 sensor to arrive.

Runs just a bit too rich.

The mudflaps look great, through they don't fit "100%" well unfortunately.

Still looks awesome.

Truck is looking great man, jealous of your front mud flaps..I need to get around to doing that, maybe when it warms up.

If you have access to a welder you should check out the coastal armor out of Canadeh. Great price for weld your own, can get in aluminum because we don’t need anymore weight, and the rear bumper has great approach angles and hides the body nicely. F+R=1 Arb front bumper.

Have you checked over your CV’s to make sure they aren’t torn/loose? With those ADD hubs could be a source for vibration.

Thanks man. I've perused your thread too. Love the tan color on your 4R. Hands down favorite color for 2nd/3rd gens.

Yeah the mud flaps took a bit to track down, 2nd gen 4Runner Mafia group had a guy on there willing to part with 'em. Really transforms the look of the truck.

Below is the original sheet from the catalog:

Its kinda wacky but almost top trim at this point.

Honestly, the desire for a new front bumper comes from just a desire for a more rugged look and to have ability to do what I want with the truck in the future. I live on a shoestring budget in a place where mudding is king, no trails or anything. I just can't justify anything at the moment. Basically I'm just being stupid.

I'm looking out for a factory brush guard (I know, I know, damage multiplier) so I can have a decent spot for some fog lights instead of ghetto mounting them in the bumper. Seems silly, I know.

The CVs were one of the first things I replaced trying to track down all the little issues in the truck. I did disconnect the hubs by taking off the spline cap and that did nothing regarding the shake/vibration.

There isn't much original rubber on the frame at this point--I've replaced all the motor mounts, the transmission mount, both front diff bushings. I think its just sway bar bushings/end links, trailing arm bushings, a-arm bushings, and body bushings are all that's left of suspension rubber.

My frame is/was bent 20+ years ago, but its been corrected enough to where it theoretically shouldn't cause an issue. Plenty of people chop off their IFS for SAS and thats definitely not done to Toyota spec

Wow this is getting long. Uhhh.

My personal theory is that my body bushings are the culprit. The more weight in the truck, the less it shakes. My passenger side body bushing is completely missing too. Since tires/wheels can never really be perfectly balanced, and you have so much rotating mass already, whatever is just slightly* out of balance is being amplified by having nothing keeping the body from floating around. I guess we'll know soon since these are poly bushings.

* slightly meaning something you wouldn't feel in a more solid car, allowing the suspension and bushings to 'absorb' the difference.

Sorry to ramble like this, but I figure its a fun read.

EDIT: Idk why I didn't think of this, but I wonder since it has aftermarket coils (no idea) that it would affect the pinion angle. I really, really doubt this as other members do FJ80 coil lifts without having to tinker with the pinion but I can check that easily too this weekend.
