Kenwood DNX891HD just walked in via UPS, installed!

Some of us are wheel whores, lighting whores, tire whores, or whores in genral LOL...Is there such thing as a radio whore? If there is, i am one!

Took out the Kenwood DDX990HD (2013 model) and installed the 2014 Kenwood DNX891HD today. along with a Mediabeam HDMI dongle.

Dual Processors are the new thing for Kenwood! much faster gps and scrolling on the radio, faster boot up times. Best of ALL MHL and HDMI input. You can stream digital content to your radio now via apple or android. apple still requires you to buy a adapter cable, meanwhile android can plug in a hdmi to mhl cable or in my case install a media beam device.

Media beam allows you to link up via wifi to the dongle apple or android, then dump the media into any hdmi input. home car, where ever! So for me, i plugged it into the hdmi input and powered it via one of the dual usb's this radio comes with (opted to use the ipod usb since i 99.9% will not be using a ipod. i am anti apple ). basically you media casting whatever is on your phone, web, pictures, music, youtube, mirror image etc.

ok ok but i installed a new radio, what about that? basically same feature set as all the other high end 7" dvd/nav units with the notable exception of hdmi and dual processors. both big improvements over the older ones.

I would actually do the DNX691hd, because it comes with a remote and 2 year warranty at the same price as the dnx571. i keep telling [MENTION=55855]zopperman[/MENTION] to buy new vs the old crap he keeps finding on craigslist or last years model refurbs that have a 90 day warranty

I have the older DNX990HD and I love it. Having wifi and dual processers would be awesome. The DNX990HD is the most advanced (and expensive) head unit I have ever had. It was in the 4Runner when I bought it or I would still be using my Kenwood KDCX995 (previously the most advanced and expensive HU I ever had)

On another note:

My 4Runner has the JBL system with the sub. I have a 4 channel amp. Can I add the amp to the system to power the front and rear door speakers and still use the factory amp for the sub?

Well you have the only DNX 990hd, since the D N N 990HD is what kenwood made LoL....

Sell the DNN990hd, upgrade to the DNN991 with hdmi and mhl or even go down to the 891 since with this media beam you dont need wifi in the radio anymore !!! this can stream cloud storage too btw

To answer your question and stop busting balls, short answer yes

Long answer, you will need to run RCA's from radio to amp. then from amp run speaker wires to each speaker.

Why? JBL amp takes signal from module, process it then spits it back out to the speakers. You keeping the amp to drive the sub. so the other speakers dont need to be driven by the JBL amp.

Depending on where you mount the amp will dictate how i suggest wiring the speakers.

dnx 9990hd is a two year old model now. you will love this 891 vs that unit. soooo much faster and better

Putting the amp (Sony XM-4S) under the passenger seat. Here is my thinking from my statement about splicing into the harness.

Currently all of the speakers are connected to the HU through a harness and adapter.

I run RCA's for the 4 door speakers to the amp. Then I run speaker wire from the amp up to the existing harness (not connecting to the harness at this point), cut the existing door speaker wires and connect the wires from the amp (that I just ran up to the harness) to the wires (I just cut) going to the speakers.

I do not do anything to the sub wires or any other wires in the harness.

I know the amp is not the greatest but it was in my wifes FJ. She only wanted something cheap. Then when it did not have any base, she wanted a sub. I put my JL600/6 in her FJ (sure regret it now) and resolved her situation.

So I am trying to use what I have instead of buying another amp right now.

Perfect, that is the piece I was missing. The factory amp is between the harness and the speakers. Thanks for talking me through this. Being a Marine, I am a little (ok a lot) thick headed.

Hi, I have the same deck, 891, and am wondering if you experience the same glitch in the navigation. I change the color to NIGHT and it just resets back to AUTO when I power down the unit. All other memory is kept on the unit.

I am awaiting an update for the unit before escalating this. They are/have been ready for the 8901 for a while now.

Also, do you know if the traffic for use with the built-in receiver is worth it, performance -wise? I reserve my bluetooth connection for the music.

Mediea Beam Device

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I was hoping someone here may know.....

To the OP or anyone else. I am geting the DNX 891HD installed Thursday, and I did not know you could use a media device to connect your apple/android devices. Does it matter what type/manufacturer media device you buy?
And just to be clear then media device replaces the need for all the crazy cables right?
*1: KCA-HD100 for HDMI, KCA-MH100 for MHL
*2: KCA-IP102 / KCA-IP103 (1 Wire) for iPod Music, KCA-IP202 (2 Wire) for iPod Music & Video

Any ideas?

MAN, You an impatient person. I got a email notification that you bumped this old thread @1248pm and another one @ 420PM. i dont know about you but i was busy at work. i almost feel like not to respond.

You are getting one installed thurday. why didnt you asked the people you bought this unit from for the answer?

You asked about all these cables that will work with this unit.
You never said what device are you connecting to it.
When you email Kenwood, you are sending a email to JVC tech support. they know just a little more than a 5 year old about their own product. They will regurgitate what is in the owners manual.

Kenwood Excelon Navigation Units (DNX691HD, DNX891HD, DNN991HD) all have HDMI input. I dont understand why you would ask Kenwood about the Media Beam device if it will work, when obviously i posted pictures of it working.
