none of the 3rd gens have chipped keys last i checked. the replacement should only be about $12 including cutting from the dealer. i believe chipped keys were introduced in the 4th gens.

Half right. All metal means no chip because there is no place for the chip. But there are plastic headed keys with no chips. My '99 SR5 came with two master keys, both unchipped: one all metal and one with a plastic head. My copies are $6 at a hardware store.

One other thing, buy the fobs used, I found mine on CL for $30 and DIY programmed it myself. EBay is another option.
Negative Ghost Rider. From 99 and up came the Chipped Keys. If you had a 99 SR5 4 banger you were safe but anything with a 6 in it they started to chip them. Also it came to production date, because some of them still didn't have it. So they have to run the vin to make sure.
So if you have a rubber end key there is a good chance it is chipped if you have the 6.

i 2nd the eBay move.. got an extra one used with the SAME FCC ID... in good shape roughly $30-$40
AWESOME call out on that A A A mention!! so instead of a "tow" you can say you lost your ORIGINAL key or your SPARE key and they help you pay for a new one from the dealer?...

Both of my. '99 SR5's and my ' 00 SR5 were 6 cylinders and didn't have chips. Might just be a Limited thing.
Blue, $1100 sounds cheap to do CV & Head Gaskets. Valve cover gaskets maybe?
