Negative Ghost Rider. From 99 and up came the Chipped Keys. If you had a 99 SR5 4 banger you were safe but anything with a 6 in it they started to chip them. Also it came to production date, because some of them still didn't have it. So they have to run the vin to make sure.

So if you have a rubber end key there is a good chance it is chipped if you have the 6.

I was told that Ace Hardware can read a chipped key as long as it is not lazer cut and make a new one as long as it is a good copy.

But that was off the record from the guy at Service Department, now that I have a good copy I will take that route next.

Half right. All metal means no chip because there is no place for the chip. But there are plastic headed keys with no chips. My '99 SR5 came with two master keys, both unchipped: one all metal and one with a plastic head. My copies are $6 at a hardware store.

I was hoping for that on my master key, the one that had the plastic/rubber top but NO...... All well 100 bucks at the stealership is not bad I guess. Now that I have a good key I'm going to have Ace read the code and make a copy of it so I will have two good ones.

i have a 2002 and it has a chip key...
cutting it is easy.. getting it programmed is another story...
it will unlock car, fit in ignition, and turn, but the car won't start..
it just keeps trying to turn but never does...

anyone know the best way to DIY program or any success with anyone besides the stealership???

Sadly their is no way to DIY program a key, you need to have a computer that plugs into the OBDII plug that will reprogram the computer and those are a couple thousand bucks. It's not like programming the factory FOB where you unluck/lock open the door etc... Like mentioned earlier any locksmith can do this and usually charge less then the dealer end result are the same. And my personal opinion even though we drive toyotas everyone should have AAA, they will cover a percentage and sometimes all of a key make for you if you go through one of their certified mechanics. AAA is cheap and it works! Once a year I lose my keys on purpose because I never use my AAA for anything else so at least it pays for its self on key makes.

One other thing, buy the fobs used, I found mine on CL for $30 and DIY programmed it myself. That was 2 years ago and besides batteries it's still works no problem. If you buy new you are at least paying 100 at a locksmith and more at a dealer EBay is another option I don't know those prices.

One other thing, buy the fobs used, I found mine on CL for $30 and DIY programmed it myself. EBay is another option.

i 2nd the eBay move.. got an extra one used with the SAME FCC ID... in good shape roughly $30-$40

AWESOME call out on that A A A mention!! so instead of a "tow" you can say you lost your ORIGINAL key or your SPARE key and they help you pay for a new one from the dealer?...

aftermarket fobs with have a different FCC ID and will not work.

they also will have different programming instructions.

Blue, $1100 sounds cheap to do CV & Head Gaskets. Valve cover gaskets maybe?

AAA employs private contractors such as tow truck drivers, battery people, and locksmiths. So let's say you lost your keys at the mall, your stuck can't drive anywhere! You call AAA they send out a mobile locksmith with all the equipment in a van to make a key. If you have basic AAA they cover $50 toward the locksmith charge, if you have plus membership they cover $100 towards the key make. They do not cover dealership key makes only key makes by their contracted locksmith. The end result is still the same, you get a programmed key or regular key depending on vehicle year. It's really worth it, in the long run to have AAA all you need to do is use it once and you just payed for your membership and we all know how expensive a tow is. Like I said earlier, if I don't use my AAA for anything I at least have them come make me a key once a year, always make sure to have the locksmith or dealer tell you what your key cuts are, it save so much time and hassle when you can tell them what your key cuts are, I keep mine in my phone so that way when they come to make a key I just tell them what the cuts are. They are usually so great full that they charge less for the work done.

With the $100 discount final cost is usually around 60 bucks

Cost break down:

Total. 65 out of pocket

But hey most of the time I just lose them at home, that way I can drink a beer and watch some baseball while they make a new key. Membership is 100 year. But I still get 3 more service calls for the year whether it be lockout, tow for 300 miles or whatever. For me it's a no brainer to carry AAA they stand behind all work done on the vehicle and will even pay you if the tow truck driver breaks or damages your truck no questions asked I used to moonlight a mobile locksmith while working like no other, to pay off debt, and seen some funny situations. Plus I now know how to break into any car or pick any lock, most importantly no safe is safe now...lol. Only to be used in the zombie apocalypse of course.:rockon:

Sorry, It was VCG's they priced out not head gaskets. If it was only 1,100 I would be all over that one. Hell I'm trying to put $$$$ away for that when it comes.
