LC2013`s build thread

Sub'd. Literally just posted a question on this with regards to the kings. Basically I want MT's setup just with a king suspension.

Hey tt-man,

From what it looks like limiting straps might be a good idea as it seems more than a few have snapped off their shock bolts. I do want all of the travel but my two reasons for moving to these shocks would be the CDC and the progressive valving. I'm with you on the adapter.....I haven't seen anything against it and I have seen some rigs running them.

Hey Inv4drZm,

This is the current setup I am running:
MT-GSJ-4052 - New Metal Tech 4x4 long travel springs
MT-GSJ-2200 - Metal Tech 4x4 3" bump stop extensions
CRWN-FJC - Stainless steel extended brake lines (still need to install)
ICON-5-6550 - Icon 2.0 VS series long travel shocks

So please correct me if Im wrong but fromt he measurements you mentioned of the MT/Icon LT shocks it seems the king 10" are pretty similar in measurement:
Extended Length: 28.375"
Collapsed Length: 18.375"
King 2.5 Smoothie Shock Remote Reservoir 10 Inch Travel: Off Road Shocks

I also have a 1.5 inch bodylift that I will be installing here soon so that should help out a little bit. This is also the adapter type that I had in mind:
https://www.amazon.com/Explorer-Pro-Comp-690001-Adapter/dp/B002SJBXPC
Personally I would buy a heavy duty shock mount from ballistic fabrication, cut off old one, weld new one in appropriate spot. Limit strap to keep from hammering the shock of it droops out. Body lift will give you more room to achieve this. Would be a killer setup!

Haha.....that probably wouldn't be a bad idea except I might have to look elsewhere for the mounts (it looks like they may be out of business?).

Now my brother is trying to convince me that I'd see little to no gain from switching from the Icon 2.0s to the King 2.5 CDCs as I don't do desert racing. :50cal:

If you wanted to simply bolt them on with that adapter- 18.375" collapsed plus .75" adapter = 19.25" effective collapsed length. Versus the MT LT 17" collapsed you're looking at a 6" bump stop spacer to keep from bottoming out the shocks. Not ideal.

If you raise the shock mount and ditch having to use the adapter- You can get King 12" shocks at 18.9" collapsed and 30.9" extended if you order them with the welded lower end as well as the over the cylinder top cap which would reduce the standard lengths by 1.75" each.

Fab up a shock mount bracket that raises it by 3" and you would only need to run a 1.5" bump spacer and would still get 28" downtravel (.5" less at the shock than MT LT).

This would work a bit nicer if you had 35's because you would need to run a 3" bump spacer anyway, to keep from rubbing. If you raised the mount 2" you would need a 3" bump spacer but would have .5" more downtravel (at the shock) than MT LT if your suspension geometry would allow any more.

Here are some links to extended shock mounts. The 4th gen setup is nuts:

With the 1.5" body lift and the lift be wouldn't need spacers for 35's, although may not be able to move mount high enough to keep from bottoming out the shock before hitting bumpstops.
I have 2" lift in rear and a 2.5" body lift with 35's and no rubbing after trimming mud flap region. With his 3.5" lift and 1.5" body lift he would be higher than me.

Actually you can get a 14" King 2" diameter RR at 19.835" collapsed and 33.835" extended if you special-order it with the options I mentioned above. Mounting it 5" higher (if possible) would net you no bump spacer and 28.8" downtravel (.3" more at the shock than MT LT) Might be a pretty sweet setup for 33's.

Once you have the tire size you ultimately want to run and the extended/ compressed length you want, I would just talk with King or another manufacturer to see if they can build you a shock close to what you want, if you have the coin.

If you both have stock bump stops, at full compression (riding on your bump stops), your body would still have more clearance than his. Your 2.5" BL would give you 1" more clearance at the wheel well than his 1.5". It doesn't matter what suspension lift you have when you are both compressed on your bumps.

Suspension lifts (springs) don't help with rubbing when flexing. Only bump stop spacers or body lifts. One of the good things from a BL actually.

Hope this is what you were referring to t-man. I ramble sometimes...

I hadn't thought of it like that. Stock bumps no matter the suspension lift, I'd still have more clearance at full bump. Thanks for clarifying my brain! Lol

Wow.....thankyou for all the info......you are apparently way smarter than I am!

I was really hoping that it was going to be a pretty straight forward bolt-on w/ the adapters and the MetalTech extended bump stops but I see that I was wrong. lol

SwitchBack

Got the switchback DRL/turn signal installed.....man these things are bright. The quality and output are great......I can't comment on their reliability yet.

What in the fawk is going on with the pinion angle on that JK? It makes my brain hurt. My only guess is that it is some aftermarket axle that has moved the rear diff cover upward from the normal location opposite the pinion? :suspicious::twitch:

Body Lift

Put on the body lift.

Should have been straight forward......one of the bolts ended up being seized on and I couldn't get it out. I was able to put the rest of the on but Ill be taking it to the shop and have them figure out how the hell to get it out.

Ill also have the put the steering extension on because it's 0 degrees outside and the hobby shop ended up closing before I was able to install it.

Also forgot to mention that both front calipers were seized and I replaced those and all four rotors (rear was pretty bad).

So does anyone have a recommendation either way as to ICON vs king 14" coils?

Also trying to figure out if I should go with 650lbs vs 700lbs.

https://wheelersoffroad.com/product...icon-14-700lb-coil-spring-3-id-2-5-coilovers/

King 2.5 / 3.0 / 3.75 Coilover Springs - Starting at $84.95

I have the King 14" 700lb and would recommend them. I don't have a front bumper or winch on my V8 but it rides fine. (Then again, I think it rides fine with CDC on the firmest setting, with 700lb coils and no bumper/winch :der:)

I think they might go good with your bumper, winch, and tires.
