LC80 Wheels+ Tundra Brakes?

^ Wouldn't grinding a crease in the back of your spokes compromise the strength of the wheel? I would think so... especially if you wheel, where strength of your parts is always something you consider when making an upgrade. I would think the small groove you grind out to clear the brakes would be a definite failure point if the wheels were to ever fail. My .02.

I don't believe so. I am just removing a small amount of the back of the spoke. You know how the spoke is a "U" and I am shaving a bit of the back of the top of the "U." I am not really grinding a groove into the wheel at all. The Landcruiser wheels are forged and are apparently one of the strongest wheels Toyota ever made.

Yah, it may not be an issue but....

And you are correct about the LC80 wheels, drop forged=ridiculously strong! and they look pretty cool too!

Here's the pic for the areas that need to be ground on the split 3-spoke 4Runner wheels, I imagine the LC80 wheel modifications would be similar.

YMMV

They are drop forged but I really don't want to compromise the structure of them especially with the way I wheel!

The LC80 wheels are some of the strongest you can find, and if the T4R wheels can deal with the "notching" for clearance, the LC80's won't be an issue. I can see cause for concern if you were doing this with a Rota or other aftermarket cast wheel, where quality might be a question.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I will take a picture and post it of the back when I get a chance, it is literally 2 or 3 mm of material I had to remove.

Sorry for reviving an old thread.

Is there a documentation somewhere to confirm that the LC80 alloy wheels are forged? I'm planning to do the Tundra brakes, but I'm a bit worried with fatigue failure that may result from doing some grinding on the wheels.

Thanks!

I don't know about documentation, but to my understanding throughout the wheeling community everyone says they're forged alloy. Which is why they're so light and desired for some people offroad.

noob question here...Why does everyone seem to want to avoid spacers? Are they that weak/sketchy? Or is it because they poke the wheels out far enough to throw rocks through your mirrors etc? I don't do much wheeling, just logging roads and washboard stuff to get me to my fishing holes, but I would lean spacer instead of wheel grinding....but then again, that is why I'm asking. Thanks.

I was hoping for an answer here too... also concerned with rub as I’m currently without a lift.
