Quick Update: The dealer believes the sound is coming from the motor, not the transmission, and they think it is probably in the timing gears assembly.

To get whatever the issue is covered under warranty, they will need to pinpoint the issue. I've authorized them to open her up (remove front timing cover, valve covers, and all the accessories bolted to the front of the motor). The service rep said that the likelihood is extremely good that everything is covered under warranty, unless there are obvious signs of neglect or mistreatment.

Considering I've religiously changed the oil at 5-6K intervals since I've owned the truck and frequently replace the air filter I don't expect there to be deposits, buildup, or sludge or anything else that should be a red flag. I'm going to ask that they take pictures once it is open so I can share with you guys what a 90K motor looks like.

Interim update: Late last Friday the dealer's shop foreman pulled the motor (completely out of the truck) and did a basic teardown (removed valve covers, front timing cover, etc.)

The good news: No signs of overheating, low oil conditions, or anything that looks unhealthy at all. Everything looks ship-shape!

The bad news: There are no obvious culprits that would cause the whining noise. The tech has opened a case with Toyota engineering to get more guidance on something more subtle that may be causing the issue. This process might take a few days of back and forth. Since the engine is out, I assume they'll also be able to examine the transmission front pump as well and anything obvious going on there.

I've told them to keep the truck as long as they need it to explore every possibility. The worst case, at this point, is that they are unable to find ANY root cause of the issue, and put it all back together. In that case, I owe $550 (6 hours of labor/diagnostics). I assume the dealer will get more than 6 hours of warranty labor if an issue is found, so we are all incented here for the issue to be run down.

Kinda curious .... if the dlr believes the sound is from the motor, why are you on the hook for $550? I should think this resolution would be on Toyota.

Apparently, with the extended warranty, Toyota wants/needs to know the cause of the issue. If these guys boil the proverbial ocean and come up empty handed, the issue is not resolved, and there's nothing attributable to a warrantied part failure. In that case, they are saying that Toyota warranty gives them nothing.

As Scott will attest, there is something wrong here, and these guys will find it. In the tiny chance that they don't, I pay $550 and have a paper trail of the issue. I'm pretty optimistic they're going to find an issue that gets covered.

I don't really know, I think they wanted to be able to dig deeper if they needed? Maybe also because they also wanted to check out the front of the tranny? Your guess is as good as mine. The saga continues...

So...just heard back from Toyota. They've recommended swapping out the entire front timing assembly (gears, guides, chain, etc.). This is being covered under my Platinum Toyota 100K Warranty, with no out of pocket cost to me.

Apparently this is the first, or one of the first times this issue has been found in the updated 1GR-FE; hopefully my case is an anomaly, but if not, guess the next guy who has a similar whine will know where to look first (after isolating the pulleys, alternator, PS, etc.).

Should have her re-assembled with fresh parts by end of the week!

Curiose if this noise could be described as "ringing a bell". Ringing a bell as in it makes noise yet causes no harm (unless one is standing to close) lol. Or could it be described as a chainsaw doing some damage. Obviously your guys are concerned enough to get you repaired.

It sounded like a whine (similar in tone to a PS pump going bad) that changed in tone with RPMs.

Joneseyy will have to sign the work order on pick up, and it should show the charges the EW paid.

It's odd really, I think my 1GR-FE did that too, but probably much less loudly. I always figured it to be something off the transmission input shaft or torque converter.

Gents, picked the truck back up today. The dealer (Steven Toyota in Harrisonburg, VA) did an excellent job communicating and wrapped things up faster than expected, considering the final timing assembly parts didn't come in until Friday AM.

They replaced most/all of the major timing components on the front of the motor and the whine is gone. Total warranty billing was $2,200, I paid zero with my Toyota Platinum Extended warranty.

I hope no one else has to deal with the same issue, but if they do, hopefully this sets a precedent in diagnosing and repairing the issue, since there's not been anything documented elsewhere in my searching of the interwebs...
