The GX probably makes more sense as a unibody vehicle. Unibody tends to ride better, gets slightly better gas mileage, and has more cargo space for a given body size. The people that Lexus is targeting probably want all those things. That said, I think the Land Cruiser Prado will continue outside the US, though, and I'd hope that Toyota understands the following the 4Runner has here. With Toyota already having a very competent crossover, there is no reason to make the 4Runner unibody as well.

I doubt the 4runner will go unibody anytime soon since that's exactly what the highlander is. The highlander is within an inch of the 4runner in almost every dimension.
And the American gx hasn't been a true off road vehicle in a while. It's a big luxury vehicle with a couple off road touches just for filler. The customers that buy them never go offroad unless their boat is parked on grass.

It is just a matter of time. I read in either Motor Trend or Car and Driver or 4wheeler or something 3 or 4 months ago ( I can't find the article) that the rumor is that the current generation 4runner will be the last body on frame for the 4runner. Sales volumes are just not there compared to Camrys and Corrolas and most people want better fuel mileage.

I hope not. The 4Runner has always been a niche vehicle for Toyota and I don't think you will see a unibody. But if they did go unibody I certainly hope they follow the Jeep as opposed to Nissan. Leave it RWD and not CVT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It would be nice to get that GX interior for the 4runner limited.

well, I hope they don't change it, I love body on frame, all the stuff they say are the benefits of unibody are negatives to me. that is probably why I am babying mine so much, I want to have it for 20 years or longer and drive over all the horrible little cars they are going to force us to drive over the next decades.

Jeep's new models are CVT...
More clutch I say.. I don't see that happening though.. My wifes mini has CVT - it pulls great and all but I love my fixed gear ratios.
I think my 4R would be perfect with a 6 speed sequential rally gearbox

I also say more clutch, I sometime wish automagic transmissions were never created. I'd rather have a manual in every scenario save for wheeling in some hardcore rocks or off camber situations.
Although that could be remedied by a doubler transfer case with crawl speed or a hand throttle.

Unless Toyota moves production of the 4Runner to the USA. Akio Toyoda has given a lot of control to the US operations of vehicles sold here. Plus, the cost of the Yen is a financial strain on Toyota to import vehicles from Japan. Personally, I prefer Toyotas that are built in Japan. They appear to be better built.

For any that has traveled the world, especially in the not so nice parts would know that Toyota will never not offer a true body-on-frame truck. They are just too damn popular and in use just about everywhere.

I like knowing my 4runner has the quality of a "built in Japan" vehicle :biggrin2:

Ah another Jeep bites the dust. I hate the CVT in our Altima. My wife and I fight over who is going to take the 4Runner. Needless to say she wins:whip2:
