Lift Gate shocks BLOWN @ 23K!!!

I'm in disbelieve, I purchased my 4R CPOE, so it had about 15k miles on.
I haven't done anything drastic or installed anything on top of the lift gate.

I'm shocked that they are done, I mean DONE, they don't even lift up half way.

Good thing I bought the extended warranty.

^ you know, I didn't check. I was just so baffled and didn't want to over think it. I will have to check later on, it's my wife's daily driver so I just told her to roll down the back window for now.

Now I have to make time to go to the dealer, show and tell in order for them to place the order. :ybrick:

Agreed, must be a leak. I've had a Gobi ladder on mine for ~15K as well and no issues

Sorry to hear, maybe the previous owner used to drive with it open for some reason :shrug: But at 23k it should definitely be covered under warranty. No need for the extended warranty yet bro and hopefully never need it.

Not sure on the particular Toyota ones but every single one of them I've replaced has a light oil of some kind inside them.

It is the opposite of what you're thinking. Running with the gate open would release the pressure from the internal piston assy therefore relieving the strut of stress.

Me Too: Lift Struts Blown @ 8k Miles

I also had my struts replaced last week. 2011 purchased Sept. of 2011.
Had no warning they were going, just one day they hatch would slam shut

Dealer was real helpful, l called them first and they ordered them so I wouldn't have to come in twice. When they installed them I was in and out in 40 minutes. Oh well, disappointed but will wait before I make a judgement on Toyota quality.

YIKES, yea that blows (pun intended )
A week ago mine felt a little weak but thought nothing of it, and what you know a week latter. I will try to do the same with my dealer, call them first - I hope that works.

Clamp a pair of vice grips on the silver part. It's not like you are going to break the strut any more than it already is.

Just had my gas struts give at 20k. Luckily no problems w/the dealership. Just took it in and they ordered replacements.

Mine went out about 800 miles after my warranty expired. The dealership quoted some ridiculous number. I think it was $168 a piece or something like that. There is not much available aftermarket, but Gobi offers a set for $99.00 shipped.

That's pretty ridiculous for a Toyota, IMHO.
I went in on Saturday and they just lifted it, wrote me up and ordered the part.

For a toyota though, I wouldn't expect that.

People who have had theirs changed through the dealer, did they last about the same amount of time? or longer?
