You want to crap on every HID thread, but there's always one in every forum. I guess we've found ours.

Nobody said these are equal to hid projectors or don't do a full retrofit, it is a much better light.....at a much higher cost. If someone wants to retrofit im all for it, i think the painted headlights and upgraded projectors look AWESOME. But i'm not tearing apart my 3 month old lights to cut on and put in my oven.

I see you've gone the route of "i'm less of a dick than others so its okay that i'm only kind of a dick." Is it the worst output in the world? No. But you should compare it to an HID projector system because that has already been set as the standard for what is acceptable light output and glare by the NHTSA. You've defined your own definition of excessive. Just looking at the side by side comparison you get 3X the glare of the stock light, which only makes sense because you are multiplying the glare from the stock projector optics by at least that much. Thats fine if you want to run a pnp kit, just don't delude yourself into thinking its not causing glare/discomfort for others.

You have an opinion, which is awesome. He has an opinion, which is also great. Just do whatever makes you most happy and be done with it. I asked the question about kits, and he gave me his honest opinion. Glare, though scientific in relation to refraction and focus, is also kind of subjective too. To each his own, dude. I mean, you're talking about it like it's adding curb feelers to the new 4Runner...

It's asking you if you want 35w or 55w ballasts, which bulbs and what color temperature, as well as if it's a canbus setup. The third option is the easy one as it's not a canbus system. The other options are up to you. Not that I agree with a PnP setup like you are about to do but I would get the 35w ballasts and 4300k bulbs.
 
Sucks to see this topic come up again and again. Sadly, I think [MENTION=51186]philsey[/MENTION] is right..... it's getting old and people will find any way possible to prove they're doing the right thing (or at least not doing the worst thing, which is essentially a positive somehow in those minds).

It's amazing to see the mental acrobatics in these threads to come to a "logical" conclusion that PnP HID kits are acceptable. At least we can't say that there's a lack of "creativity" in this group...... :rolleyes:

Lmao.... you are correct that glare is subjective. Unfortunately, I don't think you realize that the people justifying the PnP HID kits are only looking at this from the driver's seat point of view. "It doesn't seem too bad when I'm sitting behind the wheel." What does the guy 4 feet from the center line on a 2-lane road see when you are approaching with your "not too bad PnP HID kit"? Not to mention the fact that everyone is slightly elevated to begin with compared to most other vehicles on the road.... and may or may not have a 2+ inch lift kit on the 4R.... and probably leveled as well without re-aiming the headlights down to the correct angle....

Yep, totally get it. There are a number of factors outside of 'glare' to take into consideration. Leveling the lights is IMPERATIVE (this is much more important than glare, in my opinion), and just because things look kosher from inside the cabin doesn't make it so. This said, you can make anything work -- as long as you understand there are a number of factors to consider.

Just don't be a boner and be considerate of others. Both options work fine.
 
Yea it kind of seems like we're splitting hairs here... there will always be glare no matter what kind of headlight you have. Its called LIGHT. :fear:

I really wish this was standard equipment on my 4R... really dumb that they didn't include this.

No, we are not. HIDs in HID projectors don't have the glare and hotspots that are associated with running PnP HIDs, some are better and some are worse, but all are illegal and produce poor results, and they can't hold a candle to a decent HID projector.

While I completely agree that there is a major difference in glare/hotspots from PnP HID lights in non-HID projectors compared to HID lights in HID projectors, even retrofits are technically illegal.

When USDOT certifies or approves a light, it is not the projector/bulb combination that they approve. They approve the entire housing/lenses/projectors/bulbs/etc design. Now, in practice, if your retrofit is aimed correctly then the chances of LEOs checking, or even thinking of checking, might be greatly reduced - but it is still technically illegal.

i just picked up a 2015 t4r tep the halogens are decent but nothing compared to my 2006 lancer evolution mr with factory HIDs
i feel lost with these halogens
im considering the poem 4300k maybe 5 or 6000 k but not even sure what bulbs it has in it. i just broke 10 whole miles with it. drove it home and parked it and now looking for light upgrades as i think they're not enough for me
and then some real wheels and tires so its gonna sit for a while now
gotta research the largest 17 and 18" combos

are there any write ups on how to get the interior light covers off without damaging them? can't seem to find a manual or thread about this. Bought all the LED's but there's not a centralized location for these instructions....
