Located a Subaru Forester 1-DIN Field Monitor

I'll think about it, I'm not entirely sure I want to move my mirror... a FMU would be cooler, now that I think about it, but the mirror is half the price. the difference is the barometer and the altimeter... hmmmm... I'll definitely let you know if I decide! Problem is that I don't have much 4Runner cash now for the next few months. :(

I have a rear view mirror bought for 70. It's auto dimming feature is not working. But it has a working temperature and a compass, and comes with the temperature sensor. $40 shipped? Can get you pics if you want. Let me know.

oooh, so tempting, I don't care about the autodim. Does it have a manual dimming thingy (the little tab that let's you adjust the dimming on standard mirrors).

How hard is this to set up? Can you take a picture of the one you already have installed so I can see what it looks like in a 3rd gen?

EDIT: Saw the celica one in your other thread (looks sharp and really clean install)- what does the GM one look like? Or are you offering a Celica for $40? Can you clarify? Thanks!!

It's the GM mirror. Celica mirror shows either temp or compass at a time. The GM mirror shows both at the same time.

Pictures are the mirror I have. It is working and comes with the sensor. There are 4 wires. two for the sensor and 2 for +12V and ground. YOu can see how I pass the wiring from the driver side pillar. took about an hour to install.

The black mirror is the GM mirror. To compare, I have the 4runner mirror on top.

In the last two pictures you can see a metal which should stick to the windshield, and then the mirror slides into it. The adhesive is $2 at walmart.

I have a soldering iron, 40 W. Can we run this through a 100 W inverter? I always solder wires. we need about 25 ft of wire and windshield mount adhesive $2 at walmart. That's all you want.
 
What is the soldering iron for?

If I install the GM mirror, it's just a matter of running wires and tapping a fuse, right?

You have to buy some wires (walmart sell wire roll for $5). You have to attach 4 wires to the mirror plug. You also have to attach 2 wires to the sensor. I always use a soldering iron and lead to connect wires. This ensures a perfect connectivity.

I'll help you to wire it over the phone/skype. It's easy.

Ah, then I'd try to find a Surf bezel... although I guess that gets awfully expensive.

Thanks for the offer on the mirror, but I'll hold off for now. I think one exists with Homelink, compass and temp - if I can find one of those, I'll grab it.

Gulf States Toyota used to regularly put the compass ones in 3rd gen Limiteds (and sometimes the compass/temp ones in SR5s since they don't have the temp display in the climate control). When I bought my 2000 back in 2000, I remember most Toyotas here were loaded up with GST port-installed options. Most of the stuff was crap - tape stripes, paint protection, etc - but the mirrors were pretty useful. So I'd imagine lots of junkyard 3rd gens around here will have the mirrors installed. I wonder how they wired them up.

My 4Runner is originally from PA, so no GST "goodies"

BTW, when are ya'll getting together here? Have you publicized the meet + greet or whatever it is?

hmm, that's interesting and good to know... I may have to spend a day scouring local DFW auto salvage yards...
