Long Crank Time

I'm having the same issue but mine has intermittent start, especially after driving the car and starting it again ~15 mins later. I did a lot of the same changes you did from dropping the fuel tank to changing vacuum lines etc. From what I've search the contacts in the starter needs to be replaced and its pretty cheap on RockAuto Starter motor repair kit. I'll be updating this when I find the time to change it out on the weekend.

How are you associating long crank times to bad starter contacts.

Maybe thinking engine turning is too slow is all I can come up with.

Granted, 2 to 2.5 seconds is normal because the ecu will not enable fuel pump until it senses the engine rpm for safety.

Starter contacts either work or they don't with some intermittently when going bad. So I am perplexed as you are...:/

Had same symptoms long ago it turned out to be the injectors (or 1 bad), but I got them all redone by WitchHunter.

Dirt, oxidation etc. Acts likes an insulation causing low voltage to properly turn the motor.

Yes. Possible. However, if the starter isn't spinning at it normal speed. You know it has issues if everything else is good. Starters are like alternators. Average time frame 180k to 230k, then they need TLC.

Welp mine has 300k, its time to change out the old one and keep the other for spare/rebuild. $140 for a brand new Denso

Where you getting brand new Denso for $140??

Try turning it to the "on" position before starting it. This gives the fuel pump a longer chance to engage before attempting to start.

The ECU will not enable the fuel pump until it gets the signal that it senses 200 rpm from the crank sensor. This is a safety feature in the 3rd gens. So turning the key to run will do nothing..

If you are buying an aftermarket New Denso pull the contact plunger and make sure it’s greased.

If not turning too slow, very will might be leaking or malfunctioning injectors. Mostly have no beans of the fuel filter or fuel pump issue.
