This was the ad when it was listed for sale a couple years ago. The guy I bought it from added the rear bumper, some lights, built a tool box for the back and did some other shit. He also managed to smash it up wheeling so it's not as pretty as it was a couple years ago.

Damn, if we had her on our show, our subscribers and views would go WAYYYY UP!

Congrats Timmy!

That's truly a good find: Solid axle and I hope it is EFI.
I want something like this simple toyota. Newer one's have "CODE" and then it won't run as it should. Older trucks will run as long as it has power to ignition and gas in the tank. Super reliable!!

If I find an 85, last year solid axle and first year efi, I will get it. I hate independent front suspension, too many things that can go wrong there.

Jealous! I've been dreaming of getting a first gen since I started looking at 4Runners. Hopefully by the time I get one, you'll have tons of youtube DIYs on the 22RE.

I think I smell some early Toyota maintenance videos coming....

What are the plans for it?

So, so far going through this rig, I've found some things to do. First, I noticed the oil pressure gauge ran a little low so I replaced the sending unit and was happy to see the oil pressure go up. The front driveshaft had a wasted front u-joint and the splines also had considerable play. I brought the shaft to Southbay Driveline in San Jose and the owner said the splines were pretty shot. So, I had them hack off the splines and weld on a heavy duty Trail Gear spline and yoke for me. The on-board air compressor was a cheaper non-constant duty compressor so I swapped in a Viair 450C constant duty compressor which is a lot better for filling 37 inch tires and running my air locker.

Now for the big one. Even though the engine looks beautiful and runs well, it freaking DRINKS OIL! It eats through 1 quart of oil around every 600 miles. I know 22RE engines are known to burn some oil but this seems to be on the excessive side from what I've read. I pulled a couple spark plugs to see if the oil is getting past the piston rings but the plugs looks good. I've also heard it could be worn valve stem seals. What am I going to do about this? Absolutely nothing. Since the engine runs well and seems to have good power for a 22RE engine, I'm just going to drive it like I stole it and always keep oil stored in the rig. I could swap in a nice rebuilt engine from a place like 22RE Performance in Chico, CA but that would run me around 3-4k and I really don't see the necessity just yet.

I paid 12k and I thought that was a fair price for a nicely built crawler, but since the engine is a little suspect, I'm now thinking I overpaid a bit, but maybe not. Supposedly, the guy who built the rig had around 30k into it. But ya know, what the f*ck. I'm not getting any younger and I always wanted a built 1st Gen and now I've got one. Time to go thrashing around and see if I like the more extreme side of 4wheeling. I'm first going to try it out at the local mall and see how it handles the speed bumps. As you guys know, mall crawling can be pretty technical.

I think we're going to do a video to show off my new purchase and then maybe some videos as i find things that need doing. I don't think I'm going to bother doing videos of simple things like oil changes and other fluid changes because we've done it on a 3rd Gen and it's basically the same thing.

The plan is to wheel it and see if I actually like rock crawling. There's lot of good places to go in California so I'm going to take it out and see what it can do. Most of the mods have already been done, so I don't think there's a lot I need to do. I'm just need to go through it and make sure it's mechanically sound.

Don't worry about the oil consumption until the motor blows. I had a 22re that would burn a quart every 500 miles. I put over 100000 miles on that motor and it was still running strong when I got rid of it. Just add a quart every other fill up.

As far as the "extreme" side of wheeling goes, that rig will be capable. The rest is up to the driver. The best way to learn is to just go get after it. Find some local guys that do hard runs and get in good with them. Then get out with them as much as you can.

Be prepared to break shit. Carry spare birfs. Carry spare hubs. Those are what you'll be breaking the most. Get good at swapping them out before you have to do it in a rock garden. lol

I keep seeing you write this and say it in your videos. Is there something I'm missing? Are these built rigs not for driving around the mall. I always sense sarcasm in your voice and read it between the lines you type. Am I not getting some inside joke /s

The joke is people who build capable off-road rigs spending thousands of dollars on mods but are then scared to scratch it. So, they are "Mall Crawlers" because they never see the off-road. If they do see the off-road, they go on fire roads that a passenger car could negotiate.

So yeah, I jokingly call my rigs mall crawlers but I do actually off-road. To each his own but I think it's pretty stupid to dump loads of money into suspension, bumpers, armor, winch, snorkel, lights, etc and then never take it off-road.

That is so right. They dump money like it's nothing and don't do a thing with it.
You should bring that rig up to Eagle Meadows where around the 4th of July. That is when all the rigs come out and do some crawling. But it's a beautiful area to go Wheeling. Just gotta let this snow melt up here.

Good to know about the 22RE.

As for wheeling, I'm hoping I can go with you sometime Matt. Let me know when you have some trips planned and I'll see if I can make.

I definitely need to learn myself up on the front axle on this rig. I've got a couple front axles and birfield joints the guy gave me which is a good start.
