Getting it lifted at the end of the month and looking for cargo racks and then making a storage box with sleeper.

Honestly, just keep doing what you guys are doing with the 3rd gen as far as vids and don't bother much with the 1st gen. They've been around so long that just about anything you can think of has been done to them and there's plenty of information out there for it already. Just wheel the piss out of it and enjoy it. I wasn't sure if you were going to go crazy on it with a rebuild (heavier duty axles, v8, 4-link, etc..). Looks like a very capable rig as it sits. The dual cases alone are a game changer. Yeah, no crazy mods. I'm going to wheel it as is and see how it does. The dual cases definitely gives you nice gearing options. I can put it in low low and walk much faster than it moves. Pretty impressive.
If you make it out to California and visit the Bay Area, I can put you up in one of our rooms. My girlfriend does Air BnB and invites total strangers into our house so it's no problem for me to have a fellow Toyota 4runner enthusiast stay with us. No charge of course.

Yep. I didn't make up the term "Mall Crawler" but I sure like using it. The other one I like using is "Bro-Dozer". I know the true urban dictionary definition of a Bro Dozer is a big lifted truck with big tires but I like to use this term for rigs with ridiculous lifts and then have small tires. I work for the City of Salinas as a firefighter and there's a plethora of ridiculously lifted rigs that I know will never see the off-road. They literally have $5,000 plus in aftermarket suspension components and then run low profile tires. Absolutely retarded in my opinion. If you've ever seen the movie Idiocracy and there's that seen where Luke Wilson is in the arena for his "Rehabilitation" and they bring out the "Dildozer", we say Brodozer like the announcer does in the movie.

Yep, that was me on my way to Salinas. I've purposely been putting miles on it to figure out how bad the engine burns oil. With 5w-30, I'm burning a quart of oil every 600 miles. I switched a few days ago to 20w-50 and I'm curious if it's going to make a difference with the oil consumption. At the end of the day, the engine runs well so I doubt I'll bother any time soon to tear apart the engine or replace it.

Nice find! I really like 1st gens, and that's a beaut. They actually originated up here in Wisconsin. A modification popularised by Milwaukee dealer Safro Toyota.

Valve stem seals are not that bad, although the head will have to come off. No big deal, it may be due for a fresh gasket. Total cost would be negligible.

The rig has 178k but the engine came out of a wrecked vehicle that was low mileage and sitting in storage. Since the engine was sitting for a long time, dried out valve stem seals could definitely be the cause of the oil consumption. I haven't performed a compression test yet but the engine runs well and the previous owner did say the compression numbers were good when he brought it to a shop to get some work done.
At this point I think I'm just going to drive it and see how things go. If I get tired of adding oil, I'll pull the head and do the valve stem seals and head gasket.

Timmy, just like the 3rd gens there are lots of great interior mods for the 1st gen to increase functionality and creature comforts. Here's one of my personal favorites.

Thanks. It's my Way Past Mid-Life Crisis purchase. I always wanted a built 1st Gen, and since I'm not getting any younger, I figured what the hell, I may as well get one since I had the money to spend. If I find I'm not that into rock crawling, I'll sell it to the next dude.

Tim I hope the rig is still treating you well. For a low cost shot in the dark to treat oil consumption, change the PCV and then add some Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase. Drive it for a month and see if the consumption slows at all. It could be a stuck ring if it sat for a long time with oil in it.

I checked the PCV valve and blew threw it and it seems just fine. I have actually tried some Marvel Mystery Oil too. I switched to 20w-50 motor oil to see if the heavier weight would make a difference. I really think the oil consumption is the result of the valve stem seals drying out after the engine sat for a long time.
It's been sitting for a few weeks. I'm going to service the front axle and do an upgrade of the trunion bearings. Marlin Crawler has a 25mm bearing upgrade. I'm still waiting for everything I need to do it. I want to make sure the knuckles are aligned so I bought an SST from a guy on IH8MUD. He manufactures them through a machine shop near him and charges less than half the price it would cost to own the actual Toyota SST. Marlin Crawler sells the alignment tool for over $500. This guy sells it for $180. His alignment kit only works for rigs with the stock 17mm trunion bearings so I put in an order to a company to make me some custom size bushings so I can adapt the tool to work with the 25mm bearings. It's going to be a bit of a learning curve but hope the job goes fairly smooth.
