Lubricating propeller shafts

I know this has been discussed before, Ive looked through other threads about lubricating the slide yoke, they all seem subjective –anywhere from a couple pumps of the grease gun to a few dozen.
The Front drive shaft is similar and I will be doing this too. I have been experiencing an intermittent drivetrain clunk when getting back on the gas. Ive read that lubricating this area sometimes helps.
Am I supposed to be looking for expansion?
If so -how much? Im guessing about a millimeter.
Please share your experiences, thanks.

This is a tough one and you're not likely to get a fully satisfying answer. The safest course for the slip joint is frequent lubing with modest amounts which is what I've always done except for the last lubing where I went to the start of expansion. It sure hasn't made things feel any smoother down there.....maybe even the opposite, if that's possible. The recently released Haynes manual says to pump until you see grease coming out of the slip joint seal. I'm not exactly sure when that would occur. Maybe you'd see a detectable amount at the start of expansion or maybe you'd have to wait until the end of expansion to see it come out. With the warnings I've seen about not overfilling due to the possibility of tranmitting shock to the transfer case, I'm not yet willing to go that far.

Personally, my take on the overfill warnings is that it's unlikely they apply in this case. However, the supposed consequences are severe enough that I continue to use some caution.

The other joints, yeah, just listen and/or watch for the dark gray stuff to come out (versus the nice pretty pink stuff going in).

My take, just watch for "a little" expansion. When you lower the car (assuming it was on jacks) and drive a little, the extra is going to come spinning out of there anyhow.

I, for one, do not think filling the slip joint in the drive shaft until it starts expanding is a good idea. And, IMHO, expecting the excess to be expelled when the suspension is compressed by removing the jack/jacks and letting it 'spin' out is not a good idea. My reasoning is; the grease/lubricant will NOT compress like air will when suspension movement causes the slip joint to compress. lowering the suspension from a raised position (like on a jack or on jack stands) will force only enough grease out of the seal or vent to allow the joint to compress to it's normal state. But, what will happen when the suspension has to move quickly, like going over a bump, or recovering from a sudden dip in the pavement. The slip point has to move in and out quickly to accomodate the up and down movement of the suspension. the slip joint seal, and vent hole are not designed to allow a quick release of thick grease if the cavity is suddenly compressed. If the slip joint can't compress quickly enough when the suspension is compressed because the internal pocket is filled with 'solid' grease instead of some air, the shock has to go somewhere. Either the suspension mounts have to absorb it, or the rear of the transfer case takes the hit. The pumping grease in to a fitting until it forces the 'old' grease out method was meant for static applications like ball joints and universal joints, where the movement is rotational instead of in and out like a slip joint. Even in these cases, you won't get all the old grease out of a joint using this method. Think of a universal joint, with four separate grease seals, one at each end of the center 'X'. If you start pumping grease into the zerk fitting at the center of the 'X', the pressure will eventually force grease to come out of one, or possibly two of the seals at the ends of the cross. Once one seal starts to ooze grease, a path of least resistance is established, and like all fluids, the majority of the grease will take that path instead of equally flowing to all four ends of the 'X'. The rest of the cross ends will not get the same amount of flushing as the first one to let loose. Now all you can hope for is centrifigual force from the drive shaft spinning to allow fresh grease to be spun into each of the ends of the 'X' while driving. I am not saying you shouldn't continue to lubricate all universal joints if they have zerk fittings, just don't expect to be able to completely flush out all the old grease as easily as some make it out to be.

As for me, I apply some (4-6 pumps) of grease to my slip joint 2-3 times a year, and about every year or year and a half, I remove the drive shaft, take the slip joint apart, clean all the old grease out, and lubricate the splines again. This has kept the 'dreaded' drive shaft clunk to a minimum, and even if it does start, I know what it is, (and in, IMHO) don't think it is a big enough issue to get too upset about it.
 
Good point JB/Techwrench, I will err in the side of caution as we all know we cannot compress fluids. I did notice as I wiped that gunk of the slip seal shaft (looked like rust) right above that area of the slip seal and propeller shaft is the tell tale signs of grease splatter -you can see see from the pic above too, so maybe there is some truth in the Haynes manual. I plan on doing it at yearly intervals.
 
Slide Yoke Lubrication

I was confounded by all the info related to lubricating the driveshaft as I decided to lube my drivetrain recently.

My old '87 FJ was straight forward and made sense - lubricate the slip yoke until it fully extended the driveshaft. This of course resulted in grease escaping and getting spun all over the underside of the truck as you drove - but hey, on the positive side I didn't have to worry about grime getting in my slip yoke and as an added benefit I didn't have a rust problem anywhere near the joint...

I tried to research if the '05 4Runner joint was designed differently - with a seal that could possibly withstand the pressure of compressed grease (which is highly unlikely BTW). No matter what, when the drivetrain compresses, the air and grease need to go somewhere quickly and the only opening is the end of the shaft. It appeared that there is a seal, but it seams designed more to keep out dirt/grime than to keep grease in the housing. As such I didn't sweat it, and pumped away until I could see the joint begin to expand.

Right or wrong - that's the method I settled on. If I keep up with lubricating it shouldn't take much more than a couple of pumps every 5k miles or so - or at least that's how my TLC was.

Update: So I went ahead and did this, I pumped the grease gun approximately 25 pumps on the rear shaft and 40 (yes 40!) pumps on the front. Drove 10 miles added 3 more pumps on the rear. I did enough pumps to see slight visible expansion from slide yokes. With my cheap grease gun from Checkers 1 pump = 1.5 the size of a pea.

I have done ~40 miles of mixed city driving (in/out 4wd) so far no clunks, no damage yet to my tranny/transfer case. -though I dont think I have seen the last of the clunk. Currently at 38k miles, I will update thread if it returns.

Drivetrain Clunk

A little more info related to this topic that I found very interesting/informative. I posted this a few days ago in the warranty forum, intended to post it here. The info below is from a Tundra forum, but the problem appears to be common among Toyota vehicles:

"On the vast majority of Tundras that experience the thump or bump in the rear when you come to an abrupt stop, it is due to binding in the driveshaft slip yoke. When you come to an abrupt stop, the rear of the truck rises up and elongates the driveshaft (via the slip yoke) in the process. Once you come to a stop, the back of the truck settles back down and the driveshaft compresses. If the truck is in gear, there will be some rotational torque applied to the driveshaft even when stopped. This rotational torque tends to increase the sliding friction in the slip yoke. If the slip yoke is not really well lubricated or the machining is not perfect, the slip yoke will tend to bind up and not compress. Then after you come to a stop, the transmission will downshift. During the downshift, the torque on the driveshaft is released which reduces the friction in the slip yoke and it will compress rather abruptly. This is the "thump" or "bump in the rear" that you are likely feeling. As a test to comfirm, shift the transmission to nuetral before coming to an abrupt stop. If you don't get the "thump" when you do this, but you do get it when the transmission is in drive, then it is very likely binding in the slip yoke.

Ok, now that you have determined that it is binding in the slip yoke, you can either fix it yourself or convince your dealer to do it. Dealers don't make much money on warranty repairs unless parts are replaced, so they often may opt to replace the entire driveshaft assembly, which is fine as long as they hand lube the slip yoke with some good quality grease. But replacement of the driveshaft is typically not necessary. The slip yoke just needs to be greased properly, particulary on the 4x4s. 4x4s have the slip yoke at the back of the driveshaft where it connects to the rear end pinion shaft. The 4x4 driveshaft uses 4-bolt flanges at the rear end as well as at the transfer case output shaft. The 4x2 on the other hand has the slip yoke in the tailshaft of the transmission and as far as I know (I have a 4x4) is lubricated by the transmission fluid. I have heard of 4x2s with the thump, but most problems are with the 4x4s. The 4x2s may benefit from had greasing the slip yoke splines, but I have not confirmed this.

The 4x4 driveshaft slip yoke has a zerk fitting for adding grease; however, it is not very effective at getting grease at the point where the friction is taking place. There is a large void under the zerk fitting and it may take 30-40 pumps on a grease gun to actually get any grease on the splines, depending on how much if any grease was in there to begin with. The splines and seal are very tight and you may encounter significant resistance on the grease gun while grease is migrating along the splines. I've had my driveshaft apart examining the slip yoke and you have two options to properly grease the splines. One is to drop the rear driveshaft where it attaches to the rear end via the 4 bolts (always match-mark the two flanges to ensure you put them back in the same position - also, turn the bolts, not the nuts since the nuts have a high friction base flange to resist turning) and pull the slip yoke apart (again, match mark both halves of the slip yoke to ensure they go back together in the same relative position - the splines do have a wide spline to prevent mismatch; however, it is hard to see which one it is especially with grease on them and it's a pain trying to find just the right spot where they will slip together - match-marking the two halves before disassembly makes this much easier). Once the slip yoke is apart is then readily apparent why putting 5 or 10 shots of grease in the zerk fitting won't do any good. You can then hand lube the splines with a good quality grease. I would clean out as much of the existing grease as possible, but as long as you use a lithum base grease there should be no compatibility problems. Toyota recommends a lithium base NLGI#2 chassis grease for this. I recommend a lithium base molybdenum disulfide (moly) NLGI#2 chassis grease for this, the same grease that Toyota recommends for the double cardon joint. Once you've got everything greased up good, slide the yoke halves back together using the match marks to guide you then put the both flanges together, again using the match marks as a guide, install the bolts and nuts and torque. I think the torque is about 40 ft-lbs, but I don't have my manual handy at the moment. Torque from the bolt head, not the nut since the nut has a high friction base. After it is all together, shoot about 5-10 strokes of grease in the zerk fitting for "reserve", but you do not want it completely full as this will limit compression of the slip yoke.

If all that is a little more than you want to tackle, here is an easier way that is probably just about as effective. Take your grease gun loaded with lithum base moly chassis grease and start pumping grease in the slip yoke zerk fitting. At some point you will encounter significant resistance on the grease gun handle and will likely note that the slip yoke is expanding. Slowly add grease at this point. You will likely see the slip yoke expand on each pump of the handle and then slowly contract. Continue adding grease for about 5-10 more strokes unless you see grease coming around the seal, then stop. Now get on the rear bumper and bounce it up and down a few times. This will tend to compress the slip yoke and force more grease along the splines. Now take a wrench and remove the zerk fitting to allow excess grease to escape. Once the zerk is removed, if a tablespoon or so of grease doesn't come out, then gently bounce on the bumper again to give it a little help. Once the excess grease is out, re-install the zerk, clean up the mess, and you are good to go.

This was known as the "arkie6 fix" over at Tundrasolutions and it resolved many of the "thump" problems people were experiencing, mine included. I initially used the straight lithum base chassis grease on the slip yoke and I started getting a hint of "thump" after about 5,000 miles. I subsequently put in the lithium base moly (an extreme pressure additive) grease and haven't had any hint of "thump" in 15,000+ miles. My truck (2000 Tundra 4x4) now has 28,000+ miles and is "thump" free. "
 
Thanks for the information Gordo!, I feel more comfortable now that I know the 25-40 pumps wasnt excessive. Im not yet inclined to tackle taking apart the shaft but if I can keep the clunk at bay with this method -ill be happy. You mentioned that the slide yokes are on the rear of the shaft -on my 4WD 4runner they are both on the tranny/transfer case side.
 
Only found 4 zerks

I just lubricated my driveshafts for the first time. I've got an '03 V8 4x4 Limited. I only found 4 zerks. Looking at this PDF file, it looks like I should have found 5: http://www.synapdev.com/downloads/00400610.pdf

Looking at that picture, which driveshaft has 3 zerks (and is labeled Double-Cardan joint)? Is it extra zerk on the front or rear driveshaft?

And are there any other zerks on the chassis that need to be lubricated?
 
I just lubricated my driveshafts for the first time. I've got an '03 V8 4x4 Limited. I only found 4 zerks.

Should be like this drawing. I seem to recall reading that the double-cardan was eliminated in 4th gen.

Thanks, JB! I got the 4 at the transfer case, but missed the two at either end. I'll hit those tomorrow.
 
No double cardan on the 4th gen. Some how Toyota continued to print the FSM with the doulbe cardan.
 
I just want to say thanks to Gordo for that info about the "arkie6 fix". Since buying my runner several months ago this driveline thump has been driving me batty. But after reading your post I decided to get under there a pump hella grease in the slip yoke and bounce around on my hitch for a little while. I can say that I have never had such smooth stop and go's. Pretty painless really, so thanks again and to arkie6 for the brilliant write-up.

btw...I didn't even bother greasing anything else except the rear slip and drives perfect for now. Eventually i'll get under there and do the rest.:D
 
another thanks for sharing this info. I have been searching for an easy way to get rid of the driveline clunk in my 4th gen 4x4.... this finally did it.

Was going to do the jumping on the bumper thing but after I dropped the vehicle off the stands, the yoke seal looked like the pic with a big dollop of grease on the floor as well. Now I know the grease can easily escape so this is how I will grease the slip yokes from now on.

how many pumps of grease did that take? ive put like 60 pumps front and rear, and never saw any come out the joint like that.

For the rear, about 85 to 90. Maybe 50 or so for the front. It will be interesting to see how many it takes next time.
