Made a new friend

B) The F150 truck sets the standard for quietness and toughness combination. The Tundra is refined but not tough enough for the American public. My friend has a F150...holy shit, it is quiet and smooth riding! Of course, the new Tundra will set the standard, but until then, F150 is still my favorite truck to own. The frame on the F150 is quite impressive...fully boxed rails with crossmembers welded thru-and-thru both sides of the boxed frame.

Very strong and quite. But it needs a 5-speed and more power to move all that weight. 300-500lbs. more than other pickups. I can't believe they still use a 4 speed tranny.

D) Once the Tundra gets a big honkin' twin turbodiesel its going to outsell the Super Duty's, and thats a fact. Look at all the other segments Toyota has taken from Ford. Which leads to...

Ask the Ford engineer how many changes have been made to the 6.0 diesel in the past 2 years. It was over 100 each year. It is so bad they gave up and are redesigning it for 07.

For a truck, i am not so concern about 4-speed vs. 5-speed auto tranny...as long as it is reliable and durable.

I can tell that the current trend to go to a more gear ratio auto tranny is NOT always good for trucks and SUVs. For example, Mercedes now has a 7-speed auto tranny for their cars and M-class. This new tranny is about the same size & weight as my 5-speed in my G500. This is pretty cool, right? Well, this is very cool for a car. However, the downside is that the 7-speed torque capacity went down. My 5-speed auto can handle torque up to 796 lb-ft. The new 7-speed auto can only handle 542 lb-ft. This is why AMG supercharged & turbocharged cars still use the 5-speed auto tranny. Thus, as good as 7 gear ratios sound, i think i still prefer my "archaic" 5-speed tranny that can handle tons of torque...thus, having stronger individual components...which equal to DURABILITY and RELIABILITY. And in a truck or SUV (esp. one that tows), durability is far more important than acceleration.

LOLOL,

I think I will just print this thread out and show it to him, and have him answer these questions. Man, even though I knew that the rig was bad, I had no idea about all of the problems that you guys have had. Holy isht.

The best part of it is, is that he will def want to do a on road comparison, and if that is the case, it is so efing on....

This maybe a silly question, but do you guys think that the 06-07 will be a better truck than it predecessors. The reason why I ask is b/c he was telling me that the new re-designed one is going to "change everyone's thinking". Or something like that...

I will never know, because I will never buy another Ford again.

Tell him that! :moon:

Go compare resale value of any year Runner vs Explorer and that says a lot right there.
What I paid for my '99 was what '01 Explorers were going for with half the miles and mine has 112k on it and the ONLY repair (minus maintennace stuff) was replacing the rear axle seals at 100k otherwise everything works like new on my truck.

That cruise control recall wouldn't be the same one that fixed the issue of the car bursting into flames while turned off and in park would it? Apparently the cruise control module would continue to draw power even though the car was turned off causing it to over heat and catch the car on fire. I think it burned down a house or two and millions of trucks were affected by the recall.

i had a friend who lost his F-150 and his parents lost their Exploder due to this problem.

i was there when his F-150 went ablaze... we were hanging out after school playing Playstation when we smelled smoke. we walked outside to find his truck completely on fire. thankfully my truck was parked safely on the street and thankfully the fire didn't burn their house down either as he was parked close to the house on his driveway... :awais:

Reliable, durable, and slow. With and without a trailer, a 5 speed is more flexible.

Ford uses a 5 speed in the F-250s. They are worked more often and harder than F-150s.

more gears != weaker

I don't know why you want to make him feel bad... Afterall, he already works for Ford, how much worse can it get?

Actually in all honesty, I think American manufacturers are behind in terms of actually deploying the technology they develop most likely due to the cost of retooling and retraining all of the union bozos. If the people on the line had to learn new skills to maintain their jobs, we'd be a lot further. So the big difference we see is between deployment of technology. I was a special guest of Ford's auto engineering/design group for 1 month while in detroit back in the late 80's and I saw stuff that would blow your mind (even back then), but none of it ever made production, and yes everything worked flawlessly on and off the track. No I cannot elaborate because I signed a Non-disclosure.

Ask him questions he would be able to answer... why not share more common elements of designs from different vehicle lines (like Toyota). Having 8 teams design the same thing for 8 vehicles is a waste of time... Also ask him why more of the design team's ideas are not implemented in production vehicles.

If his is a V8 dont even try it. But your V6 will blow his 210hp 12v V6 away. A buddy of mine has one, nice rig if you like fixing it and not being able to go anywhere with it.

Coop

Actually, the pre-'06 V8 Exploders made only 239hp & 282lb/ft tq versus the 4R's 245hp & 282lb/ft. C/D tested a V8 Exploder last year and it took 8.1s to hit 60mph. The 4.0L V6 should be just as fast, if not faster. The '06 V8s in the Exploders now makes more power, but is still slower than the V8 4Rs.

Useless

He might be an engineer but not a professional who can balance between innovation (what FORD pretends to do) and practicality (what TOYOTA is great at).

I have seen enough of these types in software industry and its waste of time convincing them of anything.

The Toyota Way

OK, here's a constuctive idea: Have him read the book, "The Toyota Way," out last year. (If he is literate that is - oh yeah, he works for Ford & not GM, so he must have at least a 6th grade edubacation) Tell him this book and author is an American who has studied the auto industry for over 20 years. Tell him this book gives some great insights into why Ford & GM have tried hard to copy the Toyota Production System (TPS).

You could tell him that in turn, you could read a book about Ford.

I had a 97 Exploder Sport before my 4Runner.

Ask him why you have to replace the rotors on the Exploder every time you do brakes because they are so warped the whole steering column shudders whenever you use your brakes? Gotta be a design flaw. Nice Engineering!

Ask him who selected those wonderful Firestone tires that could not support the Exploder without, well, Exploding !!?!!
