Magnuson Supercharger for 2010-Present & 2010-2014 FJ

2010 - 2017 = 4Runner owners complain and moan for a SC solution for 5gen 4Runners

2017 - 2018 = Solution finally available and people b&moan over cost because people had some expectation that a SC costs the same as a Gobi Rack and a set of tires.

2018 + = 4Runner owners complain and moan there is no longer a SC solution for 5gen 4Runners

You're confusing complaining about the total price for the super charger versus the reality which is people are feeling pretty miffed about what is a "pilot program" discount which is pretty weak.

As someone pointed out this is a marketing program. If it were a true beta program it'd be invite only and behind closed doors. We know how many pilot superchargers are available, and this benefits Magnusson by giving them press, and inducts brand ambassadors on their behalf.

The sticky part is that usually brand ambassador programs work to trade deeply discounted gear in an effort to make those users your advocates. It doesn't cost 5000-5500 to make this supercharger, so given there's 10 of these, you discount them HEAVILY because Magnusson is asking a lot of the user in exchange for a 9 percent discount.

1. Removing ECU and sending it back (taking the risk of damage or loss in shipping). I haven't even removed my ECU, so I'd have to learn how to do that. Then factoring in Fedex overnight shipping, there's 100-150 dollars insured and shipped.

2. Dyno time. Dyno time can cost anywhere from 175-250 dollars. And that assumes the Dyno can handle a vehicle as heavy as some of our rigs.

3. No talk of the terms of which Magnusson would guarantee your engine or drive train if their pilot program damages your setup.

These are the things people are concerned about. Especially regarding a product that is as delayed as this product is. It would have benefitted Magnusson to really come out swinging. We still don't even have dyno number (some of us already know the numbers).

This is a forum, it's a discussion, we represent the niche of the niche, the people who really modify our vehicles. And having a Magnusson rep come here, listen to our concerns, and go back and think about how to improve the pilot program would benefit us all.

Otherwise this becomes the Duke Nukem Forever of aftermarket 4runner products.

I have no problems buying this at full price.. once it is fully tested and released.

Nailed it Isaac :clap2:

This is a marketing program, if this had any real impact on development this wound be offered at "cost" which would be around $1k or less. Additionally this is a cast not CNCd part.

Remember your systems engineering training- verification is the most critical part of development.

If this was truly part of verification process there wouldn't be a post in a vehicle specific forum promoting a 9% sale price. This is a joke.

And not have a factory rep to explain things. I agree... this is simply a marketing campaign. Verification should have happened long before this and is a completely different process.

A joke huh? Sounds like it is not for you maybe. Also, think you got it all wrong, they are not trying to sell superchargers at a discount. They don't need to sell more... This is not a bumper, rack... this is something where there is 0 competition at the moment (and most likely in the future).

I'll admit, we are all talking out of are asses with speculation. Imagine that speculation in a supercharger thread LOL.

I can tell you this. I've been involved in several of these types of programs in the past related to engine modifications (supercharger, turbos....) It is pretty standard verification practice. You don't want to offer a really deep discount to the general public for the simple fact that it will attract the wrong type of user. You don't want bargain shoppers, you want early adopters who are true enthusiast with a bit of knowledge and a willingness to deal with small issues and not go off the handle at the first bolt that does not line up.. (OMG my truck has been sitting for 5 days while they address the issue).

This is not an early beta test.. You do that with partners where you have existing relationships. The reason for this is to get a sample of years, makes and configurations.... against your release candidate. They should all basically be the same, but there could be some minor unknowns in the field....especially with all the different bumpers, accessories.. people install on these trucks.

They want to stamp out 10 kits, not 1k+ and find out there is some part missing or tweak needed for it to work on all 5th gens. Simple as that. Makes good business sense.

Remember, it is a free market. You are not entitled to anything nor are they entitled to any sales. Somehow I think they will be successful with this product in the end. I have a feeling it is not their first rodeo...

A better discount would be nice for sure, but in the end... this old quote trumps all.
The bitterness of poor quality will remain long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten

I'm 100% convinced that 5th gen owners are a very difficult crowed to please. They want it all.. with no give and take... I'm not sure what it is, but I've owned a lot of different vehicles and still see more cake and eat it too here than anywhere.... Like anything.. this kit will have some negatives. The 5k+ price tag is the first one. The loss of guarantees on the lifetime of your drive-train is the next. It's really not for everyone. You have to be the right customer. I've done things like this several times and I'm still spooked by it on a Toyota. That does not mean I won't do it..... It's just a risk/reward calculation that each person has to do for themselves. A few hundred bucks should be low within that calculation. Someone doing this under the excitement that they will save 1500 or whatever... is most likely making a rash decision.

It sure sounds like there is only 1 working supercharger installed on a new 2017 4runner?

If so, everyone else joining in as part of the pilot program, is still an early beta tester. They will not be looking for a vehicle which they have sampled already. They are looking for all the other models they need sampling and confirmation. If it doesn't fit? Its because you are a early beta tester, first of that model year/trim.

This Company knows this product, And I believe they will get it sorted.......but something about the way it's being implemented smells funny.:wtf:

I'd like to point out that Gadget over at URD has a working Whipple twin screw on his 4Runner and is a few months out from a production release. Magnusson won't be the only players.

Easy with the URD/Whipple talk, don't want this one to get locked too :bounce:

I am thrilled, I wont be participating in the beta but the price point seems right on the money. I think if the wording had been better there would have been less heartache here - others have already nailed it. The middle man approach is strange, not sure I understand why OP is doing what he is doing and not a directed Mag. employee but hey the product "looks" good and I think this was done with good intent. Looking forward to the....beta....testers to finish their items and this to be released for general purchase.

I agree the discount is not steep, but this is not someone selling OEM suspension for $500 - in that case I understand chiming in to A) let the poster know they are out of touch with reality for the market and B) potentially save some poor soul who does not know better from either buying it or worse posting theirs for sale and being made a fool of. But there is an established market for that product, last I checked there wasn't for this so lets stop beating a dead horse - If they get the amount of testers they wanted simple economics would suggest they didn't over price it, regardless of if you or others don't see the value (Starting to look like a TRD Pro thread in here)

I posted just to keep people in the loop with up to date information. No reason to question its pretty black and white throughout this thread. More to come in the next week

Looking forward to hearing from those who get selected. I got the email, but for the same reasons as many here, I won't be applying at that price point. I hope the ones who do get chosen/accept the offer are a diverse group from different parts of the country...with different terrains and weather.

What thread or where do I find info on this? His instagram was last updated 2015, just wondering where to follow his progress.

****ing retarded. They should pay us to trial and guinea pig their product. We are functioning as their rolling lab, essentially assuming all the risk and they recoup all the test work and trial information for free.

Nice model... but this aint communist Russia pal! :director:

It should be free install for duration of the test where the tester has the option at the end to purchase for a heavily discounted fee (cost only)

Why does the manufacturer think we should provide a free lab for them? Hilarious...:fish2:

Only one thing that is hilarious here.... I can't tell if you are joking or not. I really hope so...

Nobody twisting any arms here.. All of this is 100% unnecessary...... People who want it are very much willing to take on some risk for a pretty small reward, but its usually stuff they enjoy messing with.... NOT FOR EVERYONE.
