Manual XMSN and Transfer Case Plugs

Trying to change Front/Rear differential fluids as well as Manual XMSN and transfer case fluids today. I would like to save the money and do it myself.
I understand the process I just cant find the plugs.

I have looked around on several threads but I cant find any pictures of where the drain and fill plugs are for the Tranny and Transfer Case. I can do the fluid change once I find the plugs.

Really I just need a few pictures of the location of each plug for each location mentioned above.

Is this a misprint or is the drain plug for the 5VZ transmission higher than the fill plug :suspicious: That's going to be one PITA drain and fill procedure...

Yeah, the Toyota drawings aren't very good, compared to the clear, sharp, perfectly processed and reproduced photos in the VW service manuals.
I think it's trying to show that it's on the bottom, but I don't remember from my own 4Runner since I've only had to change the gear oil once, about one year ago. Also, my truck sits about 150 feet away and it's nighttime and I've already taken a bath.

have you looked under the vehicle yet? I changed my transfer case and they were pretty basic to find the drain and fill plug. I used a 15/16ths and the only two bolts that fit that were the drain and fill. haven't done transmission, and am interested.

Not a miss print it's on the far side. The illustration does a bad job at showing it though. It's a pretty straight forward task to do all the gear oil swaps I just did mine about 3k ago.

Front diff is definitely the most difficult to get to as you have to pull the factory bash gaurd to get to the plugs. Fill is still 24mm if I recal correctly but the drain has a 10mm allen head (some people say 12mm depending on year but mine fell intot the 12mm and mine was 10mm so your mileage may vary.)

For this task I recommend Redline MT90 in the Transmission, make sure it's GL-4 and Whatever reputable diff oil makes you happy. I used royal purple 75w-90 GL5 in all other gear boxes.

Open the fill before the drain always! This way you don't end up with a drained gear box and can still drive the truck to a shop to have them remove the stuck plug.

Use new Toyota gaskets!
Don't over tighten and strip them out!
You may use the camry magnetic drain plug in place of any drain plug, excluding the front diff drain plug which is already magnetic, if you wish as not all factory drain plugs are magnetic. (Part number is: 90341-18021)

You will also need a good fluid tranfer hand pump.
My parts list and good to know info:

Engine Oil 5.5qt 5w30 synthetic
Aluminum crush washer part number I do not have.

Transmission 75w-90 GL4 2.3qt of Redline MT90 GL-4
90430-A0003 Drain
90430-A0003 Fill

I used 6qt 75w-90 for Diffs&Tcase

Front diff 75w 90 GL5 1.2qt
90430-24003 Drain
12157-10010 Fill

Transfer case75w-90 GL5 1.1q
90430-A0003 Drain
90430-A0003 Fill

Rear Diff 75(80)w-90 gl5 2.6 with locker 3.1
12157-10010 Drain
12157-10010 Fill

On a less useful basis that my previous post, I only clicked on this thread because I wanted to know what in sam hill a manual XMSN was. Took me a second to realize you ment manual TRANS(mission) fantabulously wild spelling on that one, never seen it spelled quite like that, props!

What in the sam hill is a manual Cross MSN! Must be a California emissions thing.

Unfortunately none that I'm aware of ha!

I guess I ment just something better than the "squeeze" ball one I have delt with in the past or some autozone cheepo that liked to leak past all the well everything. I think I wore just as much gear oil as I put in.

I climbed under the 4runner last weekend. Having never done this job before I just wanted to confirm I was removing the correct plugs.

When you guys say new gaskets are you referring to the locking washers?
That may be a dumb question, still very new to all this DIY work.

XMSN comes from the army. I am a UH-60 pilot and that is the short terminology for the Transmission. Sorry for the confusion, I was too lazy to type it all out.
