New member
Was thinking this may end up being a sticky, so hence the somewhat general title.

I'll be driving 1588 miles to get my bumpers done in Idaho this year and we'll grab some Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota on the way.

Similar to the Latitude 40 maps for Colorado and Utah, what maps (paper) should I look at for the states I'm visiting this trip? I'm not looking for interstate maps, but ones focusing on the trails and forest roads that make for good day trips.

I love maps! I'm a big fan of the Benchmark Road and Recreation Atlases. Lots of good info, decent scale, UTM grids, and very easy on the eyes. Check amazon for the best pricing.

For digital maps on your phone or tablet, get the free Avenza PDF maps app and check out their "store". Lots of good stuff including free USGS quads. If there's a specific area you're interested in, check with the local land management agency's webpage. They usually have geo-referenced pdfs that you can use in Avenza.

I love it when you make good trips around the country to get stuff done to your truck. That's dedication! AND supporting our community!

Sorry, I'm no use to your actual question though. I generally use MVUM maps because they're free and very useful for dispersed camping. Unfortunately, they're only good for National Forest land and you have to get them at their respective offices or headquarters.
 
I have paper Delorme Atlases for all states I visit regularly. Immensely handy at times. Highly recommend. They typically show the back roads, but typically do NOT have enough of a fine scale to show things like off-road trails and such. If you want that level of detail you'll need to get USGS Topo maps (a.k.a. "Quad Maps"), but they are kinda large if printed to scale.

I also highly suggest the app "PDF Maps" by Avenza (Android or Apple). You can pre-download from a huge variety of free or pay maps. I personally have only used the free USGS Topo, but you can also pay to get Nat Geo maps, national park maps, public transit maps, etc. The beauty is that because the maps are pre-downloaded it works even if you don't have a cell signal; all you need is a GPS signal to pinpoint your location. If you don't have a GPS signal (non-cellular Apple iPad) they can still be used just like paper maps.

If you have Android, then there's also Backcountry Navigator. It does the same thing by pre-loading maps, but back when I used it with a "Palm Pilot" and Bluetooth GPS it was much much more powerful. But I have Apples now, so it's out for me.

Benchmark road atlases are great. They won't show every trail, but they'll show the major ones and they're reasonably up to date so you shouldn't need to worry about closures. I think they have better detail than the DeLorme atlas. I like the Nat Geo Trails Illustrated maps for the same reason. If there's a NGTI map for a given region, that's a good bet there's something you want to see there, and they show all the B and D class county roads and most of the open FS and BLM roads too.

And here is a link for Montana 4x4 trails, it's a link to purchase a book so not sure if that's what you're looking for. I usually carry a Delrme road atlas for the US and then I've purchased individual ones for states I frequent but I've also noticed that some states will have dedicated 4x4 trails, kind of like the hiking books you get from REI.

I just did a quick search for Montana since I'm familiar with it as I fought wildfires there a few years back. Gorgeous country but I'm certain Wyoming and almost positive Idaho will have the same style of books.

Bumpers done in Idaho? What part and what are they doing for you? Who's doing the work?

Just curious, always like to know who's doing 4 runner work in my neck of the woods!

Correct.! [MENTION=64712]CBI OffRoad Fab[/MENTION] is doing both the front and rear end at the same time. So we're planning to see some family in Wyoming on the way up, spend a few days in a rental around Idaho Falls, and then take the slow road home via Montana and South Dakota.

Will be a fun and exciting trip! :car::whoo:

Sounds like a fun trip! Funny, I'm basically doing the same thing -- I'll be there in March for a front bumper install (already have the rear) in the middle of a multi-stop ski roadtrip.
 
What time of year?
Weather permitting, I'd suggest forests E and NE of Yellowstone and Big Horn forest W of Sheridan, WY. Lots of beautiful country NW of Yellowstone in MT also. Lots of Fed land in area so FS and BLM maps available for much, and also use DeLorme.

Another fan of the Delorme Gazetteer. Very accurate and the long./lat. along the edges are handy when the map on your GPS does not show detail. You can figure out where you actually are that way. I do a little nature photography as a hobby and some of the places I go are not on the Garmin street maps but the trails are shown on Delorme.
 
I just bought the Delorme Gazetteer, they were a few dollars cheaper at Barnes and Noble than I found them online
