Hey guys. A few weeks ago I bought my first 4runner. 2011 AWD Limited. We like it so far, but we are hearing noises that don't seem to be normal. I have searched several forums but haven't found my exact problem discussed. Around 45mph I roaring start coming from the right rear wheel area and continues until around 60 mph. It sounds like it could be a bearing or maybe even a u-joint. Either way, I have rotated the tires and the problem doesn't move. It's at the dealership now, and they are calling it a 'harmonic drone' that is completely normal with the AWD. I'm not buying the fact that Toyota would send these vehicles out with this type of noise. Anyone have any experience with this issue? Thanks in advance

Just an update... I've driven two different awd limiteds today and neither have made any noise. I called my dealer just for him to tell me that mine is different than other limiteds like it and it's the fact that there are so many moving parts that tend to make noises. I have now realized what kind of people I'm dealing with so now I've got to find another dealership.

Either the dealer staff was recently attending the Drone Expo in Vegas a couple of weeks ago (military warbots, etc) or they watched this at lunch and were lulled to sleep...?

I probably will. It's according to how they act when I pick it up, and what the ending repair is from another dealer. I hate it because I went into this with the expectation that the dealer was going to shoot me a line and thats exactly what happened. No wonder I never trust a dealer. As much as vehicles cost now, feel like being honest is the least they can do.

I've had the exact same thing happen on a Tahoe - it was the interior wheel bearing (the one in the rear dif on that side). Its really tough to tell while your in the vehicle. The easy way to tell is to get a automotive stethoscope and have a really good bearing/differential tech get a look at it. Look for the guy about 60 years old working by himself looking grumpy at a ford or chevy dealer, us young people are great for electronic and fuel injected items but your wanting experience on drive trains and there is really nothing special about a toyota in that respect. All of them have wheel bearings, inner wheel bearings, pinion and yoke bearings, etc. they don't really have just tons of differences in rear solid axel vehicles.

sorry for my ignorance.. But what fluids in reference to these bearings are you talking about? I'd just like to know what to do to prevent these types of problems.

I think he is just expounding on the general lack of basic maintenance (changing fluids) for a long period of time, including repacking wheel bearings on certain vehicles. Follow your maintenance schedule and you will be proactively combating premature wear on drivetrain components. There comes a time when, no matter how good your maintenance is, components need to be replaced due to wear and fatigue. Maintain it and enjoy!
