May be having problems with my 2011 Limited

I've felt like it was a bearing, but wouldn't a bearing get way louder the faster you go?

I'm talking the grease that lubricates the wheel bearing.

This could be a number of things.

Are the tires wearing evenly in the rear? Is the sound completely gone or is the wind noise over 60mph masking it? Have you checked the rear dif fluid level and for metal shavings? Can you 100% pin point it to the tire area or could it be from the dif?

When something is wrong with a bearing it will "pit" (the rollers look like a golf ball) and it causes that awesome super humming sound. From what you've said I'm still leaning to the inner wheel bearing or the axle carrier bearing in the diff, these are hard to pin point without having it up on the rack in drive and getting an automotive stethoscope to it. It could also be a pinion bearing too, just hard to tell over the Internet.

Either way that dealer should help you - or I'd just ask for the Toyota USA's regional service manager (who should be a master ase mechanic) and ask them for help. They don't a answer to dealers or profits so they'll get to the bottom of it. I guarantee you that if it's a problem thats legit warranty issue they will bendover backwards to help. Dealers don't care, but the actual Toyota employees are great with customer service (even if it's not the answer you want to hear). My father inlaw is one for Subaru (parts also) and I've never met a person that holds there company with as much pride as real reps do.

This is some good info. I feel like it is a bearing but probably a wheel bearing on the outside. The sound of the wind at higher speeds could possibly mask it, but as loud as it is at 45-60, it would take a howitzer to mask it. I will be picking it up from the dealer tomorrow to see where I go from there.

It would be the first wheel bearing failure that I've heard of on .

The rear wheel bearings are a sealed non serviceable assembly on our trucks.
Looks like a PITA to change. It's held on to the axle housing with 4 bolts and the axle shaft itself which is an interference fit with a snap ring and retainer has to be removed first to change it out. They aren't cheap either at $300 or more per bearing assembly.

Looks like this.....

Just an update... I've driven two different awd limiteds today and neither have made any noise. I called my dealer just for him to tell me that mine is different than other limiteds like it and it's the fact that there are so many moving parts that tend to make noises. I have now realized what kind of people I'm dealing with so now I've got to find another dealership.

Your dealer is an F'ing douche-nozzle treating you like a moron. I mean,...WTF?

I just left the dealership. Somehow after hearing the same old spill about the 'harmonics' of the all wheel drive, I managed to get the head mechanic to go up the road with me. After about two miles he is convinced that I have a wheel bearing that is bad on the right rear side. I'm glad that he is on the same page and is willing to help, but it pisses me off that his boss would shoot me a line of crap like that. I can't wait for the 'I told you so' spill he's gonna get when it's fixed.

Get this documented.

I'd be PO'd too, but my advice is to play nice, as a means to an end. A pissed-off SM is not in your best interest. He doesn't HAVE to agree with the tech - and he is instrumental in getting the truck fixed.

Remember service managers are not mechanics!!! They are sales people - most are worse than a buy here pay here used car salesman.

Just an update on my 4Runner. They found that the right rear axle bearing was bad. As a precaution, they went ahead and replaced both of them. Supposedly Toyota has had a few problems with these. My car is now fixed, but I can't begin to tell guys all of the crap I had to deal with with the dealer. ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE!!! To sum it up, my car was at the dealer for 73 working hours before this problem was fixed. And to top it all off, I had to clean grease out of my seat and door panel when I got it back. I can live with that just by having the peace of mind that I will never step foot in that place again.

Glad you got it taken care of. The whole point of buying a new or newer vehicle is so you won't have to worry about repairs.
