Middle dash light out

I noticed the other day when I was driving that the light in the center console went dim, but the right side still works. The light I am speaking of is the one in the middle of the console at the top of the dash just above the three buttons that lets you select the outside temp, the mode button and the fan knob. Does anyone know if this can be replaced? Is it an led or bulb? Thanks for any input.

I have the exact same problem! '99 4Runner Limited. Everything still works but you can't read the display at night. I looked in the Haynes and Chilton manual but did not see anything about a replacement bulb.

Please help us!!!

thanks,
andy

Still lookin

Still looking for answers. I have the Chilton and the Haynes manual but neither talk about bulbs in this unit.

I have the Haynes manual too and it shows pics of the dash, but doesn't say how to go about removing the face plate. I think that it pops out, but I don't want to break it. I am not sure if the whole thing has to be taken apart to access the bulbs. I will wait till the weather warms up to mess with it.

Alright guys...here goes. There are four small bulbs inside the electronic control box for the climate system. You have to remove the dash trim, just like a radio install. Instead of removing the radio, remove the climate control module. It will be just above the radio with three screws attaching it to the dash. Pull it out, unplug the wiring connectors from the back, and take it to your workbench or table. Remove the two small screws from the back of the unit and it will now come apart with some gentle prying. The bulbs are on the circuit board behind the round plastic discs that have reliefs cut into them for a screwdriver to grip. Quarter turn and they are out. The bulbs have a rubber cover over them, possibly to dim them a bit for this specific application.

I removed all four of mine this past Saturday. I will go to the stealership as soon as I can to get new ones. I haven't found anything online about these bulbs so I hope the dealer has them. I'll keep you posted.

Update:

Went to stealership this morn...bought all four bulbs even though only two were out. Replace them all...the others won't last forever.

The larger base bulbs backlight the LCD display...the smaller base bulbs light the out/temp, mode, and other button.

Large base bulb part #81850-35040
Small base part #81850-35050

price: $5.43 each :jaw drop:

I'll install this evening and keep you posted.

Climate control backlight

Problem solved.

I can see the display again after dark. A quick ten minute job after you know what you are dealing with.

First off thanks for the response!

I started looking at it today and have another question about how to remove the A/C control panel. The manual says that I need to pry off the control panel cover but I don't want to break anything when I am prying. Do you have any hints on how to remove the finish trim around the A/C control panel and the radio?

Once again thanks for the replies.

later,
andy

Everything from the top, just above the air outlets, down to below the cig. lighter is one panel. After you pull the cup holder section out and pull the shifter section away, you can pull this section out by pulling out the bottom first and then the top last. There are clips at the top that you might think are going to break but keep pulling out with steady pressure. They will come loose. Pull out as much as possible rather than pulling up.

Readable Again!!!

Once again thanks for the info. I had to special order the bulbs from the dealership at $7 a piece. The whole job takes about 10 minutes and is really pretty easy once you get the trim cover off.

thanks,
andy

Anybody look into maybe going to Radio Shack with one of those bulbs and looking for a replacement? I'm wondering. I have two out (rear window switch and fan control) and I'm looking to replace them. I refuse to give the stealer the 700% markup or whatever it is that they're getting. Maybe that's a project that I'll look into this weekend.

The bulbs in the climate control are unlike any other bulb I have seen at retail outlets. I could not find any info on them on the internet.
The other dash bulbs may be a standard bulb available at auto stores or Radio Shack. Pull one out to verify what you are needing.

Which bulb? 2000 4R Climate control panel

Looking for replacement bulb for climate control panels. Diagram of the assembly lists part number but parts list shows multiple type (diff wattage?): Which one??

Thanks in advance,

jgf

I ordered LED replacements for ALL my interior lights from superbrightleds.com

The one for the hazard switch is a delicate fiasco to work with and the one for the cig lighter socket is part of an assembly, no LED available and no aftermarket unless you wanna make one yourself

It's a fun afternoon job to swap them all but you get to clean under all those panels while you're at it!
