Misfire cylinder 4...

Back to the dealer this AM. Ran a leak test and saw the pressure drop in cylinder 4. He then put a camera into the cylinder and you could see the coolant leaking.

Estimate $2700. Now I know.

so you've paid them already for the two week venture through there shop just to have them destroy your interior.. and now there telling you the real problem the whole time is coolant leaking in the cylinder....?????


Why would they not have done the leak down test first to catch to initial problem...

Did they pull the heads the first time into the shop? if they did and it wasnt leaking before then its there fault its leaking now. and if it was leaking before the pulled the head and they didnt know that it was leaking WTF would they pull the head in the first place for.. theres something really screwy going on at this shop..

theres no way you sould have to pay an additional 2700 dollars for something they should have imediatly found in the first place..

I mean if you have a miss fire you have on a few reasons
A.) bad spark plug
B.) bad coil pack
c.) faulty fuel injector
d.) improper timing
e.) leaking head gasket...

Eerrrggghhhh it drives me crazy hearing how dumb some dealership service shops are!!
 
Initial charge was $244 and that will be credited towards the $2700. The Service Adviser I worked with has been let go. Today I spoke to the Service Manager and the actual tech working on the 4R. He had it diagnosed in an hour.

The dealer did buy a new set of mats, should be replacing the gas pedal.

Now to call Toyota's 800 to see what they can help with. I do believe someone mentioned they changed the HG design for this motor.

Yet another 04 head gasket issue.
Has anyone checked in the Tacoma Section to see if this is happening to 04' v6 engines too? I am waiting right now for a new/jdm engine to come in for my 04' V6 Runner.
 
I wonder if it has anything to do with the different manufacturing plants. what are the first 5 digits of yalls vin numbers
 
Just got off the phone with Toyota Corp, 800-331-4331.

I got the total brush off...

There is no service bulletins on this, no recalls and nothing they could do.

I think its time we started putting some numbers down for the #4 cylinder misfire issue. This is at-least the 4th or 5th (separate) thread I have read on this issue.


Commonalities:

2004
HG failure ?? still pending
8-years of life

Just a FYI- from what i have seen... is there any thing else I can add to this list?

Like Aha I've also wondered if there might be a link to the plant it was produced at (Tahara vs Hino). If anyone wants to check which plant they were manufactured at you can see how here.

There have been reports of other years having failures but the 04 does seem to have more than it's share. I'm having a hard time believing it has to do with age since there are so few 03's reported as problems. Maybe mileage has something to do with it but same thing - you should have more of the other years in there.

Sorry to hear that. I had a 2005 4Runner w/171000 miles until Feb 28 2013 when I traded in for a 08. Reason I traded mine in was that I had the same thing happen. I replaced the plugs as it was running rough. Then all the lights came on and it ran worse. I had the codes checked and it was #6 and #4 cylinder hitting up. Replaced #6 coil pack and it was number 4 only, swapped with #2 and it stayed with 4. Took it to the dealer for $160+ they told me the head gasket was leaking AF in the #4 cylinder. Estimate 2000 - 2400. I also had an issue with rust (real bad) around the top edges of the window on the hatch. I really like the 4R's but they seem to have some real bad trouble area's. Good luck!
