Misfire

So here's the update fellas. This time the misfire was on cylinder 2. The dealer pulled the coil, cleaned the connections, and swapped it with the cyl 4 coil. The misfire didn't immediately replicate on cylinder 4, or cylinder 2. I'm going to pick the truck up, continue driving it, and we'll see if the misfire persists. I feel pretty decent that they've at least taken a logical approach to corner the actual problem.

I also got some offhand comments from the service guy about the engine being "dirty". I feel that is more an indication of an appropriately used 4runner!
 
@joneseyyy - glad you are getting it taken care of. At least it's documented now.
@OrangeTexan - You are probably correct for the reasons stated above that a E100 vehicle would probably do as good or better in the mpg department. I would think it is a pure academic discussion though unless they come up with the celluose ethanol one of these days. In theory though gas beats ethanol every time on energy equivalent per gallon. Inefficiency of ICE is what makes them even. the E10 fuel at stations is not as efficient as pure gasoline but in my experience the price difference in the two makes it a wash.

Pretty much everyone had a good point in this conversation as they were all right to a point.

I think I am going to clear the code for now, run the Toyota-branded EFI additive they sell at the dealer, and run Shell V-power or Chevron for the next 2 weeks and see if this goes away.

I also think I am going to order a scangaugeII (thanks for the inspiration PhillyD2) just so I can have greater immediate visibility/ability to monitor the truck.

Scangauge is worth the money. I bought mine ~6 years ago and it's still running like a champ without issue. So, that's less than $30/year; worth it IMO.

Agreed. Scanguage's are awesome! I took mine apart and flush mounted it in my Titan's dash. It went with the truck. Probably more to come regarding that...:)

Don't have any pics of it. I can tell you that it turned out really well! The faceplate comes off easily with just a few screws, but the sides of it are curved, so it won't sit flush with the dash. That's where the mini tablesaw comes into play. :wow2:

Somebody send me a free Scanguage and I'll show everybody how to do it! (hopefully that'll be the next MOD)
 
My experience with ethanol is all negative.

It can destroy fuel pumps and fuel pump sending units. I have a 1999 ML 320 mercedes and I've had to replace the fuel pump about every 50K miles because the ethanol in the fuel I use in that vehicle erodes the aluminum parts of the sending unit, which is part of the fuel pump. Others have had their fuel pump fail outright. A friend of mine who works at the MB dealership says just consider the fuel pump as a maintainance item.

I have 1997 Porsche 993 C2S and Porsche specifically recommends that the fuel used should contain no ethanol for my model and many others as well.

My new 4runner indicates something to the effect that gas with no more than 10% ethanol can be used.

So my question is will the use of higher amount of ethanol damage the fuel system or just cause a degradation in performance? If say more than 10% in gas can damage fuel system then maybe 0% is even better.

Thank you kindly, that one's kind of a garage queen it has less than 15K miles. I run it on 100 octane sometimes but I really think 93 is fine and it's available at a station in town here that sell real gasoline.

Change is GREAT....as long as it is for the BETTER! I LOVE improvements & updates. Unfortunately the negatives out weight any positives that may exist with ethanol fuel. Now they are talking about E15 :bash:

As an update, no more misfires after cleaning and swapping the coil locations. Have driven ~150 miles since the dealer trip. I'll check back in a month or so to close the loop if the misfire doesn't recur.

Maybe I should keep the engine bay a little cleaner...
 
Misfires

The manual on my new 4RUNNER states never use fuel that contains more than 10% ethanol as it will damage the engine. My new Lexus states the same. However the Lexus LS manual states the car will perform better with the standard 10% ethanol than 100% straight gasoline, and it recommends not to use straight gas. At the cost of repairs which could void your warranty I would follow the manual exclusively.
 
I wanted to give an update to the situation. I truck has continued to intermittently misfire (always cylinder 2), and has now been to the dealer north of 6 times to try to fix it. I've opened a case with Toyota, and a case representative is supposed to be calling me.

The truck is currently at the dealer; they'll be replacing the fuel injector tomorrow, and then driving the truck for a couple days to see if the issue recurs. So far, the plugs, wires, and coils have all been eliminated as the culprit. Really only leaves the injector, fuel rail, and maybe the ECU?

Everyone seems stumped at this point...
