Mod Warning on Thread Content

Over the past we have been getting a large influx of new members. That's good. Unfortunately, many of them (and a few of the older members too) do not know that this is the 5th Gen sub forum and content should be somehow related to the 5th Gen platform. That's bad. A few years ago we could allow general thread topics on "tires" or "lights" to stay because the number of new threads was not that great. Now? There's just too many threads being started to allow it and I am getting a lot of complaints. From now on, if you start a thread that is too general (just because you own a 5th Gen does not mean you can talk about stuff here that is not 5th gen specific, like shoes, or BMW's) it is either going to get:

1. Moved to the correct sub forum
2. Merged in to one of the thousands of threads we have on your special topic
3. Just deleted because I don't have time to do the other two.

Remember we have a lot of other sub forums like, general, off topic, tires and wheels, etc. Post there please.

Some of the topics I see that do not belong here:

"Best tire for winter/summer/fall/dirt/road/mud/sand/moon/underground?"
"What's the best hid/led/halogen light bar/interior/headlight/taillight?"
"Best plastidip methods/wheels/badges?"

Now, if you have a specific question on these two examples, like the specific fit or part number, etc for a 5th gen, then by all means post here. Otherwise, if you make a new thread about them, it will get one of those three things I listed above.

But it is the truth it's become a hot bed for so many unnecessary discussions or repeat threads that could be elsewhere.

Now if there was some way to avoid the floor mat, vent visor, and black out build threads that get started and never updated again... :mod:
 
I disagree with this in it's entirely.

There is an underlying tone of aggression and discontent with these types on statements on open​ forums. There is already a subset of members on the this forum that are agressive and belittle others who they feel have asked 'dumb' or redundant questions. Statements like these only encourage rude behavior by some.

We are here to discuss topics, questions and concerns about a common interest. In this case the interest is a car.

Let's keep the conversation civil and respectful to every. If you don't agree with a post or comment disagree without being disrespectful. Point others to resources without lowering yourself to name calling.

No one knows when a question or comment will spark an idea in someone. To say that someone shouldn't ask a question because it's been asked before or in a different manor is counter productive to enguaging discussion.

The statements we make are a reflection of ourselves and not the people we making them towards.

unless you are paying the monthly rent on the storage space and bandwidth utilization for the site I don't think you have a pot to piss in when it comes to the policies on redundant threads...

just an observation from a FNG

The only thing I have to say about this is that it is a bit of a gray area.

Same questions get really old....So people should search ... and not expect to be spoon fed everything.

But... I also get irritated when some threads get moved that are not necessarily redundant. Yes, they could go to another section like offroading or general... but the reality is that the post is targeted to an audience not necessarily a section. It might be useful for everyone, but the audience is key.

Examples: Fun trails to run in xxx (yes this is not 5th gen specific, but the poster is asking an audience of 5th gen owners and there are some specific characteristics of a 5th gen to consider).

Considering a new Colorado zr2... again nothing to do with a 5th gen directly, but it's an relevant topic to the audience since these are people who just purchased a new BOF SUV. Sure this could go in the general section, but hardly any 5th gen owners would see it.

Offroading for beginners... I just had a post like this moved last week. Yes, it could have went to the offroad section, but the idea was to target 5th gen owners (many of which just got their first 4x4) Instead, 5th gen owners never saw it and they may have been interested in the event...

The clutter does get really old..

Personally, The thing that pisses me off more than anything... Is when someone post a problem. One of those please help threads. Lots of people spend the time to respond with suggestions... then the OP just never responds with the outcome... That is 100% noise and those people should be banned as far as I'm concerned. It's extremely self centered BS and it happens constantly. The purpose of the forum is to give and take... but many people just want to take.

There are lots of dumb questions, eg "what color should I buy?", "why am I getting only 18.2 mpg?" etc. These are just dumb, because no one can answer this, and if you'd been here more than 2 months you too would tire of this rhetorical blather. There's no ideas or information to exchange with this waste of space. I like white, he likes red, she likes blue ... blah. Srsly now Ted, do you find this entertaining, or informative?

As to "redundant"; same thing, sorta. Do you have any clue how many threads have been posted about floor mats, plasti dip, which AT tires, bug guards, window tint, ad nauseum? This forum is a decades-old treasure trove of knowledge and experience - ALL of which is a Google-search away. But daily some lazy-ass posts about a highly redundant topic rather than make a simple search.

It just gets tiresome Ted ... hence the poster gets called out.

I too disagree with your disagreement. The 5th gen -mod- works hard to keep our forum cleaned up, and most of us appreciate it, it takes a lot of thankless time.

"Help!"
"Look at this"
"What do you think"

Non descript titled threads should be deleted, period. They are as bad as click bait. If a user is too lazy too type out a description, likely they fall into the above category of not responding back to those that do bother to answer.

Oh and if you don't like the mild mannered asshattery that goes on here, I suggest you grab your mouse and head over to Pirate 4x4 to ask your questions :biggrin1:
