modifing stock bumper

hi guys, i've seen a lot of pickups from early 90s and a few 3rd gen from 96-99 were they split the original bumper and use just the upper half of it, i think they look good, but on 99+ 4runners, it seems a bit more complicated. There is not only the fact that you don't have the turning signals on the upper part (the least important issue) but you have that kind of a guard going over it, and on top between the mask and the metal is a plastic lip, most 99+ owners should understand which parts i refer to haha.

Here are a few pics of half bumpers, and on one of them the guy did a tube defense underneath it, which in my opinion looks really good.

Have anyone done this on a 99+ bumper? or at least anyone knows if you could disasemble the bumper without using a grinder?

You can remove the lower 'valance' (plastic) portion by removing the series of ~8 bolts holding it to the metal part of the bumper. Then you can trim whatever you like

thanks mate! and it's the top part supported to the frame or do i have to weld some supports? i know i should go looking at my truck but it's at my granny's since i don't have space at home haha

Here's mine before/with and after/without the lower portion. I don't have a preference either way with the stock bumper but mines off and I do like the tube design in place of it with the stock bumper. I think that looks good.

Didn't really pull the same look as the 96-98 bumpers

dude that looks pretty good, i was thinking about using the top and making holes for the signals, but after seeing how it looks (ugly compared to 96-99) and how it looks trimmed, that's the way to go! thanks a lot guys for the pics

How'd you mount your front plate? And do you have any type of body lift on that? I don't remember my bumper being able to see that much when I didn't have my valance on. I think I might take the valance back off o.o I like how yours looks...

I mounted my plate using zip-ties over some steel mesh aka= gutter guards from Home Depot, which is only like $3. Try it out if you don't like it, you could always put the valance back. Question though? Do you have Limited fender flares? Because I had to cut mine to make it look good and flow right...

I'm not using any body lift of any sort- Just a 3" suspension lift (1st page of my build)

Ahhh cheap is always better. I might have to check that out because the only reason I replaced my valance was because I don't have a skid, so I have like 2" of my radiator exposed... May check this out, and eventually find a skid...

I do have the fender flares but I broke them both already so the little bumper pieces are already not on there. Had to replace the bumper and the bolts were rusted in so badly I couldnt properly remove them from the old bumper. Eh it isn't much to do but I'm gonna be extremely busy for a while so, not much happening to the rig. I've got all the parts to a turbo kit and next paycheck to hve the last piece welded up, and I won't have it in for probably 3 more weeks.. XD
