If you own a 4th gen now you're posting in the wrong section. Just out of curiosity though, why didn't you read about towing specs prior to trading in your vehicle?

After reading all the input on this site with people hauling 6000 pounds plus, didn't think an issue. So focused on tongue weight being the issue, thinking that the only issue, didn't appear like would be a problem. Still seems like I'd be pulling less than alot on this sight, doesn't make it right though.

Payload, tongue and rear axle weight are usually your limiting factor with the T4R. There are actually a few different payload numbers listed depending on the number of passengers in the vehicle. Normal range is from 900-1050lbs but the actual number should be based on your GVWR - curb weight
The GVWR for the T4R is 5710lbs. Curb weight is listed at 4500lbs leaving you 1210lbs for payload
What you need to do is load your family and fill the gas tank and get it weighed. Subtract that number from GVWR and that is what you have left for tongue weight. Keep in mind that when using a WDH you will transfer some of that weight back onto the trailer axles so your 600lbs tongue may only put 500lbs onto payload.

Hi Jetboy. Is 5710 your gvwr? The 08 brocure says 6005. I would have thought the same. Good point on the w.d. hitch now since I got the 08 model. Do you think V-8 will pull 4600 lb trailer through mountains good. It seems so smooth compared to the 2010 model engine I just traded away. Max torque at alot better rpm now. Thanks for the inputs.

Searching around seems to give conflicting numbers. I've found numbers for the 2008 V8 from 5330lbs to 6005lbs for GVWR, base weights of 4045lbs and payloads up to 1285lbs. Not sure why it has such a large range, but my door jamb list 5710lbs so thats what I go by, although I have no doubts it could handle more.
The V8 will handle the weight in the hills but you need to take it easy. Usually it's the wind resistance you feel more. 4th gear on the flats will have less strain on engine and trans and give better mileage. You will likely drop down to 3rd on shallow hills to hold speed and 2nd on steeper hills where you still may not be able to hold speed, but that's ok, let it crawl up. Rigs will do the same to reduce wear and conserve fuel.

I have a GVWR question regarding the 5th Gen.
I am looking on the toyota site and comparing the Tacoma and 4 runner - same engine and tranny - for towing purposes. The 5th Gen curb weight is 4675. The Tacoman is 4155. So 520lbs. The 5th Gen GVWR is 6300, the Tacoma - 5450. So does that mean the tacoma payload is 1295 and the 5th gen payloace is 1,625?.
Next, the towing capacity of the tacoma is 6400 lbs, for a total CGVWR of 11,100. The towing capacity of a 4runner is 5,000lbs, for total CGVWR of 11,300. Now, those #s don't add, but that it not my question.
My question is I can load my4runner with 1,625 in the car and then tow 5,000lbs. Why can't I leave the 4runner empty and put those 1625lbs in the "vehicle" I am towing? - Tongue weight being left out of this question, let's assume, for this question, that tongue stays the same (I know it doesn't) and you are supposed to have a X% of the load on the tongue.

What "frame mounted hitch" did you use? Did you get it custom welded? Im guessing they took off your stock hitch... Also what is a decent price for this mod?
I would like to tow my 20' Airstream with my TR4, and your set up sounds perfect to me.

jmg18, my T4R is an '04 so I had options for the aftermarket hitch. I went with a Curt 13445 since I had a smaller trailer at the time. I had it beefed up when I went bigger. As far as I know the 4th Gen hitches won't fit the 5th Gens. Not sure if it can be modified to work and haven't seen an aftermarket for the 5th Gen yet.
