Most Miles on 1 Tank of gas?

I have a 2000 v6 4x4. Drive 70% highway 30% city with 85,000mi.
Average before putting TruFlow air filter was 250 per tank. (per tank meaning about 20 miles after the gas light)
After airfilter getting about 270-280.
Whenever I fill up, after hitting the E........I can only squeeze around 15 gallons in.. Is there a serious issue with the fuel gauge on 3rd gen? Has anyone pushed it an let it run out of gas? I am thinking there is still 2-3 gallons when it hits the E.

I just filled it up today, was at the E. I let it fill up to 14.8 gallons. When I started it up, it was on the top part of the full marker. Drove for like 20 miles or so and the marker is at the bottom of the full marker now.
I do notice the gas marker is kind of whack. Sometimes when I start up, it'll start low and then work its way up. But sometimes it'll start high and then work its way down very quick.
i've got a 97 3.4L 4wd. i've got 150k miles and i get a consistent 260-270 miles combo city/hi driving right as the gas light comes on. If i'm driving only on the hiway i get 300mi before the gas light comes on. i used AUtoRx and swear my mileage jumped from 14-16 mpg to 18mpg in teh city. highway improved also. I also have an Amsoil dropin filter. No other mods. Oh yeah, tha tincludes a ski rack permanently on my roofrack.

do 4wd have more mileage than 2wd? cuz thats what it seems like to me.... and by the way.... what is AutoRX? is it a kind of synthetic oil for the engine or something?

With a full tank (meaning filling it up a 2-3 gallons more than when the actual lever automatically stops), I got 400 miles to that tank and the light just came on).
I have noticed that when the auto lever at the gas pump clicks off, there is plenty of room for more gas. I do it slow and manage to fill about 3 more gallons. I know this is not good practice, but I do not let it overflow and I can judge how full the tank is by the sound of the gas flow as it goes down into the tank. Try it, you will be amazed.
So needless to say, I go about 380 (to be safe - and I never like to drive the 4Runner all the way empty), that is 3/4 city and 1/4 hwy daily commute. I have a TRUEFLOW air filter and a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler with bigger pipes from the cat-back.

I live in San Francisco, quite a bit of traffic. After less than 40 miles, the marker is just above the mark right below full. I don't know what it is, the 4/5 mark maybe.
I'll see how the tank goes, I basically just drive city. Occasional highways.

Yes there was a problem with the fuel gauge. I think Toyota had a TSB about it.BabeGTR said:

Bigger and heavier tires hamper my gas mileage a bit and when I think it's empty it's usually only good for a 15 gallon fillup but I don't try to empty the tamk anyway.
The most you might be able to squeeze in is maybe a bit over 17 gallons if you ran it dry since thre's genrally a gallon or more that you won't use.

Yeah its the 3.4lt V6. The key is to fill it up to the top, you can get almost an extra gallon if you top it off past when the pump stops on its own. When it stops, just wait about 5 seconds, and fill about .8 gallons more into it. I drive a lot of mile to work and back, so i squeeze every drop i can out of the tank.

"When the gas nozzle clicks off, it means the gas tank is full. Don't try to round off your sale by adding more gas (topping off). When you do that, you are not getting the gas you're paying for. At the tip of the gas nozzle, there is a small sensor hole that senses when your tank is full. When gasoline covers that hole, the gas tank nozzle shuts off, and you are more than likely just increasing your price per gallon. The extra gasoline you are trying to click into your gas tank is being sucked back into the gas station's storage tanks or is just stuck in the hose- which, when you remove, will spill on the floor (which is a health hazard, as well as a waste of YOUR money). Also, topping off will weaken the performance of your vehicle. Your gas tank needs extra room for the gas to expand (especially on hot days when gas warms up and expands).
Topping off is a waste of your money, a contributor to air pollution, and will damage your car's system. "

Topping off will catch up to you if you keep your Runner for a while;I've seen saturated charcoal canisters on quite a few cars since you need to allow for expansion in the tank but sueezing in a little after the click to maybe round up the price won't hurt but that "extra" gallon could be causing the damage over time.
