Most Miles on 1 Tank of gas?

my 1990 V6 was horrendous on gas....it was a small tank to begin with but I was lucky to hit 300km(180miles) on the trip meter....my 2003 is a lot better....drove to my sister's place on Long Island last month from here and averaged just over 650km (400 miles) to a tank of gas....it worked out to about 17.5miles to the gallon for the trip back and forth.....

Kregg, I'm starting to think its normal.

Given by what I've seen, I'd say most of the forums are working men who drive a lot of freeway.

The only people that really drive all city are me and you.

But then again, I'm not completely sure. Sometimes weird, I just filled up to 1 click and no topping off, drove like 15 miles and i'm down to 3/4.. maybe it'll go down slower or something.

I'll wash the car this weekend PROBABLY. I'm praying that its the last day of rain here, its been raining EVERYDAY for the past like 45 days or so. Maybe not every day, but once a week it doesnt' rain haha.

For $5 worth of gas, which is like 2 gallons, I get like 16 miles.

Ouch! Glad I didn't get the 6. $5 gets my 4 cyl all around town for a few days!

For me it depends how much I top off my tank. I just got my 4R 2 weeks ago. And I notice my mileage varies from high 15's to low18's. And I'm all stock.

I notice I can get at least another gallon after the first click off. Does anyone else have this situation?
I drive a mixture of city and highway.

the filler neck leading to the tank itself is pretty long....I can easily fill it to the brim with over 4-5 litres of fuel (just over an imperial gallon (3.8l))......it's a little slow going but nice to know it's 'packed full of fuel and ready to go to the end!'....sorry, NASCAR talk just kicked in...lol....

You need to not fill up ALL the way due to the air in the tank needing to expand when it gets warm which if overfilled can damage parts of the fuel system most likely the charcoal canister will become saturated and cause emission problems and you'll have a constant gas smell.

I repeat,it's a bad idea and not worth the extra gas you're getting in the tank.

thanks for the info.....I've heard before through rumours that one should not top of a tank but never was told why....now I know....when it 'clicks' now I'll consider it 'packed full of fuel and ready to SAFELY go to the end' without costing me $$$$.....I appreciate learning something new like this....

I mainly drive all city, maybe 10 of those 50 miles is highway. My air filter looks clean. I've put like 800 miles on a new stock airfilter only.

i think it might be the tires, I measured them again, and they were 29 PSI. The maximum PSI is 50 or 40 I don't know. The website says 50, but I saw somewhere to not inflate more than 40.

How high should I inflate the tires?

If your tires. Put 34-35 in them!!! Going from 35 down to ony 30 psi will easily make you loose at least 1+mpg.

I've mellowed my driving a bit and used the ECT for half the tank and got 16.5 and a whopping 247 miles out of the tank.

I sold my 97 sr5 v6 4x4 back in Jan 06, stock except an K&N filter KIT, my tank would go till around 280-290 mostly freeway 70-75mph, oh yeah it had 211k still ran great. I now upgraded to a 99 4runner sr5 4x4 v6 with 133k STOCK and only get around 240-250 per tank. I'm thinking about doing the tru flow with deck plate mod, Do any of you guys with this setup get better mpg's. If worse case scenario I think I will buy another k&n filter kit, I think there going around $190 on ebay.

400 Miles/tank

Highway: I just got back from a short day trip today (Austin to Friendswood(Houston) and back) - got all the way down there and back on one tank - came out to 396 miles on my trip odometer. I still have 27 miles left according to the range comp.

City: I drive in the city and usually get about 350 miles/tank.

I use 89 grade gas. (The medium grade) Which is only about 2.00 more a tank if you think about it. Gas prices are killer, but to fill up less is kind of nice? It's all a matter of what you care about I guess.

I ordered one of those high performance air filters after reading up on them and if I can get at least 1 mpg more with it then that's worth the 30 bucks to me.

I didn't read every post so someone might have already mentioned this, but the terrain and where you live might have a lot to do with the mileage you're getting.

So anyways I live in San Francisco and get the same results as texas4rnr. City driving i usually top off at 320 to 350 miles running 89 octaine. On long trips to SD or Tahoe I get an average of 400 miles. I've got a pretty stock '03 Limited V8 4WD 4Runner, however I added the TRD dual exhaust and noticed an average jump of 50 miles to the tank.

Thanks for posting. One thing to keep in mind, is the 3rd generation model has a smaller gas tank than your 4th gen model. We only have a 18.5 gallon tank so we tend to fill up before the 350 to 400 mile range. Plus on some of the earlier models the gas gauge is a bit off. Add it up and we tend to fill up sooner.

Not bad for the 4th gens with the v8, how many gallons do the 4th gens hold? I just filled up my tank on my 3rd gen STOCK, and I checked my tires and they were around 29psi, so I inflated them to 35psi, hopefully I get some better mpg's. I keep posted.

Yeah, the 4th gens have a 23 gallon tank, so that would definitly boost the total miles.

NV IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!.....lol.... I think i might get over 200 miles out of this tank! I drove from jasper to birmingham (approx 70 miles round trip) and i did notice that i was edging near 190 miles with a quarter tank left... but with tornados and crap i haven't really had time to check it out yet...
